Fantastic
22 reviewsSuch a beautiful site: wild deer, kestrels, sparrowhawks, swifts, foxes, badgers, muntjac, hundreds of stunning dragonflies, all seen around the grounds and from the decking area of the lodge. There's a clear view of the tor, endless uninterrupted skies, lovely peaceful walks nearby... we were lucky enough to catch some of the Perseid shower and the aurora borealis due to the expansive skies, as there is little light pollution due to the remote location. There's also a barbeque pit, a table tennis table, plenty of picnic benches, and good dog walks too: nice to see that much of the grounds, whilst tended to, had been given the chance to re-wild. On arrival, the hosts had generously left a small bottle of milk with tea / coffee / hot chocolate / sugar and a small selection of biscuits - a welcome sight after a long drive. The lodges themselves are relatively basic - as in they don't have any frills - but they contain everything required for a relaxing break. There were board games available, plus a radio and TV, and a selection of books, and the wifi was even better than we have at home! There is ample parking outside the lodges. The beds were already made up (very thoughtful addition, most welcome) for our arrival and are very comfortable, and the bedrooms are just the right size with good socket locations. The furniture is sparse but adequate, and the kitchen has pretty much everything you need. The bath towels - also provided for the stay - are HUGE! and very fluffy (my mum would call them 'best' towels), and the washroom facilities - including the rare decent shower - are spot on for what you need. It's a lovely touch to have outside seating, too, as we watched the sun go down from our deck-side seats on more than one occasion. If we had to identify a downside - and this is peripheral, pedantic and almost not worth mentioning - then we'd say the lack of local footpaths / PROWs (that aren't roadside) or public transport, but if you're driving anyway then it's not an issue. If you're looking for a getaway that really gets away from everything then this is exactly the place to head for: idyllic location, breathtaking nature, close enough to the towns of Shepton Mallet (10 min) and Glastonbury (10 min), the city of Wells (30 min) and other local attractions... or just sit on the decking and enjoy the peace! Also great if you're a four-legged-friend holiday (like us) as some of the lodges have enclosed spaces outside. Thank you to Suzanne & Rob - it's an absolute gem of a place, thank you for looking after us.
