Great location. Clean and comfortable and nicely decorated. There is noise at night but it’s not loud with the windows shut. It didn’t bother us. Communication not the best, but check-in from 3pm fine - get the key from Bar Splendid just next door. Don’t try and request early check-in.

My girlfriends and I stayed at the Splendid on our recent trip to Zurich.  We had spent an hour walking from door to door to find a hotel and there was either no openings, only slept 2, or were $300 a night.  After 24 hours of traveling I was ready to pay the $300 just to have somewhere to take a nap.  So glad we kept looking!  The gal who checked us in was friendly and honest.  She told us it was a 1-star room but that it was clean.  And it was.  The bedding had been freshly laundered when we checked in.  No fancy frills but it was everything we needed and we couldn't beat the location and the price.  And considering how expensive Zurich is you will want to save your pennies and get a cheap room so you can afford to eat!  There is a piano bar on the 1st floor and yes they play music till 3 AM....but we found it charming and actually enjoyed it.  Yes it is an old hotel, you have to share a bathroom, the lobby smells like smoke, the rooms are small, the music is loud, and there is no AC - but we loved it!  It you're looking for a romantic getaway with a fancy room and all the luxuries of home....this ain't it!  But we were looking for an experience.....and we got it!

It's not the Hilton...but clean, comfortable, and close!

I am going into this lady owned hotel for 25 sears and can confirm it is a good dropping point. Particularly for the piano bar which os probably the most charing 'play it again Sam' night club in ... Switzerland. Enjoy the VERY central location, watch the old phone booth at ground floor, get lost and set with your suitcases in the numerous floors. Be quiet and comfortable in your room with or without shower... just enjoy, cheap hospitality downtown in Zurich.

Old flair low cost hotel in 'Züriniederdorf' (the 'village' in Zurich)

Reaching Zurich main railway station, we reserved a triple room with shared bathroom from the tourist information center 
The hotel is in the heart of the old town, with the so many surrounding shops, cafes and restaurants. 
Our room was in the 3rd floor, the rooms were basic but clean the shared bathroom was near the room and ok 

On the downside 
There was no:
Safe box
Mini bar 
Elevators 
NO ONE HELPS IN CARRYING THE LUGGAGE 
No Ac or Fan 
The reception wasn’t that helpful 
The noisy from the piano bar down stairs makes it hard to sleep early

A cheap hotel in the heart of old town Zurich

Please read my story, I had to involve the police!
I had the worst experience in my whole life, i could have been raped or trafficked

I came to visit Zürich that day and the trains seemed that they will take a long time to go back to my Airbnb which is where I was staying for my trip to Switzerland. Which is why I thought staying at a hotel will be a safer option than travelling at night…. I was completely wrong

I contacted the phone number on here and then received texts about the booking and everything, the person gave me the address and confirmed that I can come to the hotel and check in at Bar Splendid, I go in and it’s a Friday night the place is full of old people they seemed nice however was very crowded.

The lady at the bar got me to pay for the room on card, didn’t even check my ID or anything, but I was tired to realise all the red flags, I asked her for the room card and she took me upstairs to level 1 at her “office” to get me the card.

Her office seemed to have a doctors bed and equipments which seemed to be a general practitioner room… that was confusing since it was a hotel… her office was very suspicious.

She handed me the cards and told me to see if the room number were on the card (since she didn’t have glasses on), non of the cards were my rooms number so she assigned me a new card on the USP on her laptop… which was strange how she can do that.

I was tired so I say bye and go to my room, I fall asleep right away, but I was still alert.

I wake up at 6am in the morning and I take all my clothes off to take a shower, my bathroom door was open, as I was washing my face, I hear the main door for the room quietly opens…. I started to freak out and scream for that person to close it. It was an old man voice speaking German.

I wasn’t able to see him he wasn’t able to see me as we both were hiding behind the door. I screamed and threatened to call the police three times and he said “call the police, I don’t care”

This is when he moved the door further, and I knew at this second I had to be brave and act smart, I jumped out and slammed the main door.

When I came out to slam the door so he does get in… I noticed he was completely naked… old naked man having access to my room at 6:00 in the morning…. I started to freak out and I wore my clothes as I was on the call to the police.

I explained the situation and they came in 15 mins. They didn’t have access to the main door and asked me about the code which I didn’t have.

The police then asked me to check my windows to see if I can throw the access card so they can get in, I checked my windows and they lead to internal building…

The lady assigned me that room for a reason…

The police told me to wait and they will be coming… I kept waiting for another 10 minutes and I was feeling very cluster phobic.. I took a pan with me from the room and I had to be brave and try to leave the room because staying there with no ability to escape is not good at all.

I tried to open the main door. I wouldn’t open… the door was glitching…. (Seems like a lot of accidents happened there for it to glitch)

I eventually kept tagging and pushing until it finally opened. I ran down the stairs with a pan in my hand and ended up opening the door for the police myself.

The police never asked me for my details or even came to check the room. All they did was listen to me. All they asked was if the door is okay to use for the next person coming. I said I don’t think so.

Then they walked out without investigating any further, it was very heartbreaking and shocking story.

I am a 21 year old female which wanted to stay safe and go back to Australia alive, and I had to face the creepiest story ever in Switzerland which is considered a safe country.

I thought my life would be valued more than that. I am still under the shock of what happened.

I even texted the lady that checked me in and I attached the entire chat… very cold careless response… which actually puts her in suspicion as I believe she probably gave that stranger access to my room.

NEVER GO THERE! Naked man accessed my room at 6am!

This was a last minute booking and we were out of options,

Booking:
The booking process was quite slow and it was very difficult to get any reply to our questions. We had to ask several times. Once we agreed on the date, we were asked to complete a form and to add our credit card details. On the document it was mentioning the renting period and the price. Instead they were a mention about a deposit to be paid and a minimum of 1 month rental. We completed the form and add comments and asked confirmation. We never got a direct answer to our question and instead we were asked in how we wanted to pay (cash or by wire transfer). As we did not trust them we told them we were going to pay by cash.

Check-in:
We communicated most of the time by email and we were asked to send international text to confirm our arrival time. This was quite annoying. There is no reception or nobody there all the time if you have any questions. We had an agreed appointment time to meet with the husband to get the keys. The husband was on time but barely spoke english. We were taken to the room and asked to pay the rental (and given a receipt). We then received a piece of paper only written in German. This was quite pointless as we do not speak German. 

The room:
It looks brand new and it was clean when we arrived. The kitchen is very small and there are very limited cooking items. This make the cooking and washing very difficult.
The internet connexion is very good and we had to re-logon a few times.
The TV is good quality but most of the channels were German only. The remote control was not working very well and despite changing the battery the remote stopped been recognised by the TV. 
During our stay, it was very hot and we had to open the windows. We had the following issues:
- At first we could not open at the fullest the window and only limited fresh air was getting inside,
- they are a few bars downstairs and they were very noisy until very late at night,
- in the morning we could hear from 5am trucks coming to collect the rubbish,
- We could smell the smoke of the cigarets,
This make our stay quite unbearable. We requested a fan and it helps a bit.
Later we were shown how to open at the fullest the windows.

Laundry:
The machine are free to use and you need to buy your on product and write your room number on their schedule in order to use it. There is only 1 machine for several flats and most days they are only 2 slots available for only 2 flats. The cleaning lady is using it all morning and she is supposed to be done by 2pm. Once I had to wait as she was running a machine. I complaint by email and never got a reply.

They do not reply to email on Sunday.

Check-out:
The day before I told them when I was going to vacate and only the next morning I was told to leave the key inside and to go.

The room only had 2 roll of toilet paper and we had to buy additional ones. As for the kitchen we had to buy our sponges and product in order to do the washing. Nothing provided.

The "hotel" is well located as you are very closed to various shops and restaurants. However having a few bars downstairs it makes our stay quite bad. The owner only seem to be here to collect the money. Interaction with them was mainly by email and difficult.

Terrible stay

Knowing this is a cheap hotel, we were prepared for average accommodations- which we got. The room was like any other 1-2 star European hotel, smelled like smoke and unwashed sheets. We sucked it up, knowing we were gonna be staying there for less than 12 hours. What we weren't prepared for was the night time. We got back to our hotel wanting a good nights rest for our flight early in the morning- at about 12:30 at night we wake up to a woman hysterically yelling for her life, tugging and pounding at our door trying to come inside. My three sisters and I immediately popped up out of deep sleep in a worrisome state. My sister immediately got up, holding the door and yelling at the woman to go away- there was no way that we were opening the door for fear of our lives. Immediately we went to the window, which looked down to the bar across the street, and yelled for someone to come help us. Meanwhile this lady was still wailing outside of our door- begging for help and screaming that her son is dying. A man came up about 5 minutes later yelling at her to leave and the crying stopped. We hear her same voice downstairs and she is on her phone acting as if everything is fine. At that point we were freaked- they could have been ploying to rob us, or things even worse. We tried to not let it freak us out, hoping it was just a freak accident and she was just drunk or on drugs. We fell back asleep, thankfully, expecting to get rest for the entirety of the night- but we were wrong. At about 2:30 AM the same frantic, pulling and tugging at our door promptly woke us up- this time a voice of two men. Yelling into the door "I'm the man..I'm the man...I'm the man...". My sister held the door once more yelling for them to leave or she will call the police. They then started to ask for lewd acts through the door. We picked up the phone to dial the police but there was no landline... we couldn't call out of the room. We yelled once more that we were going to call the police and the talking stopped. Dead silence after that incident and once morning broke we were out of Hotel Splendid in a hurry to leave Zurich for good. We went to the hotel reception and the lady did not speak any English as we tried to tell her the events that occurred overnight. There was nothing we could do and we angrily walked out of the hotel- ruining our visit to Zurich. Do not stay at this hotel! Steer clear!
