We spend one very pleasant week in hotel Al Porto.  The quality of service , cleanliness, charm and food deserves 4 stars instead of the given 3 stars. Hotel Al Porto is not a modern palace but a cosy, family run hotel where it is easy to feel at home. The staff is super friendly and extremely helpful.  We are sure if the bathrooms were updated to meet today's expectations, the hotel would satisfy all who come to enjoy a break from daily commitments. We will definitely go back to do just that !

We had an all-around amazing stay at this charming hotel located right off the main promenade in Ascona. The lake front rooms offer breathtaking views of Lake Maggiore, but we also had some quaint rooms in our party situated around a picturesque interior courtyard. The food and service at the in-house restaurant is far superior to that of various other places we tried along the promenade (which we felt were true "tourist-traps"). The personal and near around-the-clock attention of the couple that manages the hotel sets the tone for everyone else working there. Even the youngest (and most needy) ones in our party were cared for in a very sweet way.  Highly recommended, would return anytime.

Frightfully expensive though, as is all of Switzerland!
The city is very pretty, but I would not stay or eat there.
Shops are good too, but you're better off driving a few kilometres in to Italy, where the prices drop by more than 50%!

Charming hotel with excellent location

The best assets of this little hotel are the courtyard in the upper building and the view from the main building of the Laggo Maggiore. Besides this hotel is outdated, many details would need refurbishing. The stafif was friendly, breakfast selection is usual. The restaurant prepares a good osso bucco. If you would like a great view of the lake and dont mind furniture and bathroom from the 80s, its your kind of place to stay. I found it overpriced for what it had to offer,
