Hostel Mamallena Boquete

Absolutely love Mamallena! Have stayed here many times, always a great time. It is so easy to get to from Bocas del Toro where we live using the Hello Travel shuttle (you get a discount if you book the transfer and your room together). They have shared rooms and private rooms, I have stayed in both types of rooms and they and are very clean. All of the guests are really cool, people from all walks of life. Juan at the front desk is amazing! Always very helpful with information about Boquete, places to go for dinner/drinks/anything and he is ALWAYS in a good mood with a huge smile on his face. The owner is very gracious and helpful with anything you need as well. We 100% reccomend Mamallena in Boquete and in Bocas.

We are "travelers of-a-certain-age".  We have traveled to Panama several times in the last 8-10 years.  We have never stayed in a hostel before- but we thought what the heck let's give it a try.  We stayed at Mamallena for a week.  We were certainly the oldest couple in the place-no problem.  The place was full of late teen to 20 somethings, most of them had backpacks from knees to neck (hope their backs hold out). We had a private room with private bath-they also have dorm style rooms with shared baths. We were there over the New Years holiday.  The proprietor Miguele planned a party the evening of Dec 31-complete with food and home-made Sangria and invited all the guests staying at his place.  A great time was had by all  (it was a very special touch)  Miguele and his side kick Jeimy Guerra were very informative, hospitable and friendly.  The accomodations were adequate and the grounds were extremely clean
(kudos to the housekeeping staff).  There is another Mamallena Hostel in Bocas so we would definitely consider staying there next time we visit.

Easy hostel in the hearth of this mountain retreat. Great staff, lots of fellow travellers, nice cook your own breakfast, fun starting point, super cheap! The hostel is really worth the stay, for the stuff in the city, for the mountains!

We were part of an Intrepid Group and had our own room and bathroom. The Hostel was quiet, sitting area near to us with comfy chairs. Good amount of spaces around in and out to sit and eat or just sit. Kitchen good, well equipped with utensils. Pancake mix and coffee on offer each morning which was a lovely touch. The staff were very helpful and spoke good English. Its centrally positioned too. We would recommend staying here.

Stayed here 8 years ago when climbing Volcan Baru. Not so much fitness needed this time round, yet required a fair bit of stamina to get here in one day from Osa Peninsula, Costa Rica. The natural first stop in Panama: no point staying in bland David, when another hour takes you up into the rarefied mountain rain.
Still felt familiar & ever-busy though still helpful. Boquete's more commercial & has lost some of its charm. Not all. Doesn't help that it rains in July; March was ideal last time.
Might have tried a different hostel this time, but a touch of nostalgia got me back. Different staff but similar friendly attitude. Ok-priced dorm bed, facilities fine, and always well set up for onwards movement. And hardly time to drip from the bus stop across the square. 
The toings & froings with Bocas shuttles were relentless though, so not the most relaxing place to hang around, especially in the morning. No room to swing a kitten. (Of course I wouldn't.) 
That aside, a happy return to Panama. Bocas is wonderful, as is Lost & Found. But that was then & done. Now other fish to fry en route to Colombia. Missed out on Santa Fe last time, and El Valle: these are two very different mountain settlements well worth breaking the journey to El Canal.

We had quite a good stay in Mamellena Boquete. The staff were friendly and happy to help and our room was clean and tidy. The pancakes for breakfast were good but I found the fridge to be quite messy and packed full of stuff such that there was no space. People would leave food open hence it smelled quite a bit too, but aside from this the hostel was nice. There was a television room which had a lot of channels which was nice to relax in.

Great escape to Boquete

Quite a good hostel

Hostal Mamallena is a colonial building at the main square of Boquete, a provincial town in the north-west of Panama. The room with a private bathroom is ok and quite clean. There is a big bed, a bunk bed and a sideboard. The light is dim and gloomy. You can rent towels for 10$ deposit. There is also a 5$ deposit for the key. Water isn't hot, it's lukewarm. Breakfast is included in the price, it's tea/coffee and pancakes but you have to fry them yourself. And I don't like them. We pay 25$/night for a double room booked with Booking.com which is cheaper because at the reception the price is 33$! The internet connection is good. There is a TV room and a few other places with sofas to have a rest. The staff is kind and helpful. They offer some trips and activities but you can organize them yourself, it's cheaper.
We check out when we climb Baru volcano at night and when we are back we get another room which is bigger and better.

Pros: Great location, right outside the bus stop when you arrive in town. Kitchen equipment was adequate. Comfy beds. Electric points for each bed. Lockers. Upstairs sitting area (which is better than the downstairs space). Clean. 

Cons: RUDE staff. Cleaning staff especially - got spoken to like absolute crap. Sitting areas where so basic and unwelcoming. Also you get assigned beds - so even if there are free lower bunk beds you have to stay in a top bunk?! Rooms where cramped and dark (lights weren't working). Wifi went off for a day. In my opinion not worth $15 for such a basic hostel with rubbish facilities.

VERY average, NOT worth the money you pay. Rude staff.

The hostel is the typical for backpackers but with few cons:

- Nobody came in our room during 3 days so the bin at the bathroom was completely full and we didn’t have anymore toilet paper.
- The windows are not the best and they don’t isolate so it’s quiet noisy, specially with the birds at the near trees and the noisy bar beside, I needed to sleep with earplugs.
- For breakfast there is only pancakes and syrup with coffee or tea, nothing else, and you have to make it yourself (what is not a problem). So imagine the line of people to make them when it would be way easier if someone from the hostel would make them knowing that is the only thing they offer avoiding the people who prepare michelin star pancakes during 15 min.
- There is just one fridge and they were more than 20 people at the hostel, so to find your stuff is not easy or someone ate already (someone ate one yoghurt from us).

Pros:
- They offer some tours and activities and the hostel is well located.
- If you need a shuttle to Bocas del Toro you get a discount.

Lazy hostel

Lazy staff, overpriced and the music from the bar next door will keep you awake.  This is an overpriced crappy hostel.  The refrigerator is crammed full of rotting food, walls are thin, and staff are unwilling to help.  Avoid this place!
