Hostal San Gabriel

Stayed in San Gabriel for 3 nights in Quito. Needed some R&R so wanted to stay outside the city. The bus is only .25 cents to Old Town and the area is very safe. We had no problem going for dinner at 8/9PM there. The owners are great and it is a good place to practice Spanish.

A very good place to stay in Quito. A bit out of the way, but cheaper than average so you can afford to take cabs to the city centre. The area is very safe to walk around, very silent (which is great, considering how Quito is!), so you can sleep well at night. We had a nice, very spacious room with a huge wardrobe and super-hot shower. Beds are comfortable. The owners are very sweet and caring. This really is not a hostel, more of a guesthouse (no use of kitchen allowed). However, at breakfast time there is a very nice atmosphere, as guests sit around the big kitchen table while the landlady prepares eggs and coffee, and everybody is chatting. Very good pick indeed!

Safe, Quiet and Friendly

quiet and safe

To be upfront, this place isn't the cleanest, but it isn't by any means the dirtiest.  There are no bells and whistles here.  What you DO get when you book here are the following:

Private bathrooms
Quiet neighborhood
Excellent location (easy walking distance to CHEAP public transportation)
Lots of close eating establishments
Nice and helpful owners
Safe and secure

If you are looking for a nice accomodation where you can kick back and feel pampered, move on.  

If you are the type of budget traveler who just needs a place to drop your stuff when you check in and then have a safe, quiet place to rest at night before getting up and leaving for an adventurous day again in the morning, this is the place for you.

Good for a place to crash but don't expect glit and glam

We arrived to this hostel after travelling throughout Peru, where we stayed at various hostels/guesthouses, so we really didn't have any high expectations. However I can only agree with the previous review, from anthony - this place is really poor. The only advantage is quiet and safe location, and hot shower. Yes the room was big, but depressing, very old, walls full of cracks and dirt, dirty window/curtains/blankets. Wardrobes were also big, but smelled very bad. I'm pretty sure that "Professional photos" (photos from Booking.com portal) were taken 10+ years ago, they definitely DON'T reflect the reality. 

Wifi was working only in the morning. Our room was not cleaned during our stay (this itself wouldn't bother us, but the trash was not taken out and we didn't get clean towels). Breakfast were so not continental (as stated on Booking) and didn't contain any fruit. The owners were nice and friendly (they speak only Spanish), but at the checkout, we were not given the bill or any paper from payment, and they charged us the whole room price, however later at home we noticed at our Booking confirmation paper, that they are charging 50 percent of the room price prior to arrival. Yes this is partially our mistake, we should've noticed earlier, but....it's still not very nice. Would not recommend the stay here.

Not recommended

Sorry for this review, after almost 8 months on the road stopping mainly in backpackers, we had the misfortune to book here! We went of the reviews, why its got an 8.2 I will never know! The moment we walked through the door and looked at the dirty walls we new something was wrong! The lady and the man are friendly, but she showed us to the room, it was dirty the walls need paint! It was very depressing! No hot water! No WiFi coverage. Sorry we walked out, we paid 20us extra for two nights in a place 5min away its a palace compered to this!
