Gongyi Huayu International Hotel

The hotel is a bit old to be fair but not as bad as made out in other reports. English is not widely spoken but there was always someone who could help. It is quite arrogant to expect everyone to speak English in their own country. Check in and check out followed normal Chinese routines and was same as anywhere. Rooms are big with tea/coffee and kettle provided, empty fridge [not minibar with ripoff prices], local TV, WiFi. [Note - you need a VPN to connect to many/most western websites and you need to have that running before getting to China]. The wall sockets are Type A,C and I - no not international, but an international traveller should know to carry a universal adaptor and not blame the host country, Saying that I forgot mine and the hotel did not have one, [although they were helpful enough to try to find one] so I bought one locally for 15 yuan. The breakfast served is plentiful with both local and western cuisine, with knife and fork provided for those who need them. I didn't try the hotel restaurant in the evenings as there are so many eating places within a short walk, from fancy fondue restaurants to cheap noodle houses. Depends what you want but don't expect English menus or conversation - or standards of hygiene, but that is probably better than the sub-continent. First room we had was a bit jaded but second one was fine, ask to move if you are not happy or inspect the room first. Trouble is as a foreigner you are not allowed into the cheaper / better Chinese hotels, I tried and was forced to use the more expensive ,I assume Government, hotels. It helps having a Chinese translator but I assume anyone coming here for business would be accompanied by their host company translator. If on pleasure then go somewhere nice - GongYi is an industrial area and not much to recommend it.
