Spending two weeks there, enjoying the warm peacefulness of a cup of tea and joy with other traveling fellows.. Feels like home, or how you want home to be 😊
I wish I could come again, maybe spending more time next time..

This place was wonderful- had the most character of all the places we stayed in China. The ladies that run the place are so nice and friendly, and they offer yoga classes in the morning! The only place we found in all of China with yoga classes! Right in the town square, delicious food and coffee. Loved it!

I stayed at the Horse Pen hostel with a friend and we both loved it. 

We enjoyed dinner with the hostel staff on our first night - I think everyone in the hostel at the time opted for this group dinner so the hostel staff ended up accommodating around 20 people and it was brilliant! It was one guest's birthday and the staff even bought her a cake to celebrate. The hostel overall was so personal and thoughful, they attended to every individuals' needs. 

On our second day we joined the free Saturday guided hike. This was brilliant and was so nice to not have to worry about directions!! You could ask Carol, our guide, all sorts of questions and find out all about the people, culture and history. Whilst on the tour we were asking Carol about tea as we had been planning on buying some famous Yunnan tea but didn't know where to start. Carol said they actually sell tea at the hostel and we could try it the next day. 

The next morning we had our tea ceremony with Carol. Although we did have every intention of buying tea, we didn't feel pressured at all and Carol offered cups to other people staying at the hostel who weren't going to buy any tea. I enjoyed learning all about the tea and how to carry out a tea ceremony - so glad we did it here where it could all be explained in English!

Clearly we loved our stay here, the ambience of the place really brings people together and encourages talking to fellow travellers. A big factor of enjoying this place were the people we met. We enjoyed eating dinner with them, exploring shaxi together and playing games back at the hostel!

The rooms are basic but perfect for our needs. We loved our cute little private twin room. Yes the toilet is half a metre from your bed with only a curtain to separate - but you can always use the communal toilets! 

Basically we loved it here! But if you're a bit precious and require luxury, stay elsewhere.

We spent three nights in Shaxi Horse Pen 46. The staff are all friendly, helpful and make you feel at home. The 'family meal' was delicious. The communal area is relaxed and full of character. A great location within Shaxi. We stayed in a twin room on the first floor which was small, clean and nicely decorated.
I left my phone charger in the room and they sent it to me in our next hostel the following day. I'd recommend!!

Charming and relaxed

My Favorite place in Yunnan

This was one of the pricier and definitely the most basic room we had on our trip through 7 Chinese towns/cities. Also the smallest room for 3 we got. 

Took a triple and it was the width of 3 mattresses pressed together, dim and uninviting, we wanted to leave when we saw the room but it was too late in the evening. Walls were definitely "rustic" or worn out. Sufficiently clean essentially but it didn't quite feel that way. 

Space was probably one of my biggest gripes - for a triple, there was only enough space to open 2 backpacks and even then, our 3rd preferred to wait outside because it was just too cramp and there was nowhere to sit aside from the beds. The bathroom and shower space is cheaply partitioned off in the room with the tops open, poor ventilation and the space is about the size of a single mattress. Quote: "J3sus I need to do yoga to get into this shower" and if you sat on the toilet, the door wouldn't be able to shut because your knees were sticking out. Again for a triple room for 3 adults not in an open relationship, we took turns waiting outside.

Pros - easy to locate, very central, good for western people not particularly keen on an immersive experience with non-western tourists. Good shower pressure / temperature. Good file with info on the area. Really lovely communal setting space. Reliable wifi. Standard backpacker friendly.

Wouldn't return - expensive for a backpackers and the triple is way too small

calling it an old school hotel is just an excuse to serve you a small, whacky room, with unacceptable standards. the entire room ceiling was 1.9 meters so tall guys beware. the toilets could not be used with door shut. windows that fell apart as i was trying to open them for some fresh air. the location is nice but that alone cannot justify the ridiculous 100 yuan/night price tag. disappointed and will not come again.
