Patapata Hostel

It took us a bit to find this place - Valparaiso can be a bit confusing when you first arrive - but once here, our experience was excellent.  Our room was clean and convenient.  The staff were very helpful and provided good guidance about where to go and where not to go in the city - very useful advice.  It is central for all that you would want to do in the city and has some great restaurants and bars in the surrounding streets - the staff will help if you need it.  Breakfast was basic, but a bonus I was not expecting.  Would recommend highly.

Location of Pata Pata hostel is great - it is on one of my favorite streets in Valparaiso, the streets with the 'We are not happies, we are hippies" steps at the top. Dorm rooms were about 7,000/8,000 or more 12,000 a night if there is a festival on. Stay included a very simple breakfast of jam and bread and some fruit. The beds were comfortable with extra blankets available in the rooms - it got very cold at night so this was great. There were a lot of young babies/kids staying in the hostel (I think the children of the hostel owner?) and some of the mornings they were making a lot of noise early in the morning. The other travellers I met staying here and some of the staff working were the best, and I ended up becoming good friends with the other backpackers while I was there - we cooked dinner together, went out and went to the festival at the weekend together. They take some ID from you as deposit when they give you the room key, there was some confusion when I checked out they couldn't find my driving licence. At first they tried to claim I didn't give it to them (!) but later they found it in another box.

Very good hostal in the city center of Valpo. Very nice hospitality, an excellent breakfast. ☺ The only thing is that may be a bit cold in the room.

Pata Pata Hostel

Excellent atmosphere

Wonderful place valparaiso, charming area and building but very poorly maintained and very dirty unfortunately   (dirty rooms , beds and toilets, dirty clothes and towels left by previous guests scattered all over the place, no toilet paper , no hot water in the showers , no soap) and no breakfast as advertised on the reception. Not the friendliest atmosphere either. Wouldn’t go back.

unpleasant experience 

The ‘owner’ needs to learn a thing or two about hospitality. She doesn’t inform you upon check in that you’re not allowed to use any of the hostel ‘facilities’ after check out, this actually includes sitting on the sofa downstairs! She expects you to leave your luggage in an unlocked room and be on your way, absolutely ridiculous. As I had a shower because I wasn’t informed of this stupid policy she tried charging me for another night (whilst translating through somebody) no chance love, she also continued to lurk behind me whilst I grabbed my things. 

The hostel itself is well located but it’s quite shabby, the owner again moaned when somebody tried to use the oven??? The bed sheets stunk, the water is freezing cold and her irritating unwashed children run around the hostel making unnecessary noise, one of the brats doesn’t stop winging all day/night/early morning so sleep is very disturbed. There is also a breakfast advertised which when we asked we were simply told ‘no’. 

Do yourselves a favour and stay at either Planeta Lindo or Casa Volante where the staff are more accommodating and the hostels themselves are 20x better.
