What an incredible experience! From the moment we got picked up at the airport, until we got dropped off at the water taxi. Francis, his wife, and his young daughter were very welcoming and hospitable. We stayed for two nights at their cozy lodge in the lush Belize jungle. Through Air BnB, We initially had booked a private cabin for the first night and then a shared dormitory for the second night, but Francis was able to put us in the private cabin for both nights. The bed was comfortable and comes equipped with mosquito netting, although there were barely any bugs inside. There’s no electrical power inside the cabins, which also means there is no a/c, but it isn’t necessary as it gets surprisingly cool at night. We found ourselves using the extra blanket that was provided. For those who want to stay in touch with loved ones or post their travel photos, WiFi is available in the common area. They have running water for showering (sorry, no hot water), flushable toilets, and clean water was provided for drinking. Every meal cooked by Francis’s wife was delicious and filling and they took food allergies or restrictions into consideration. When it comes to the adventure activities they offer, the two most important things to them are safety and that you have fun. Francis and his staff are filled with knowledge and love to share with others. We enjoyed learning so much about Belize and Mayan history. Due to time constraints, we initially had planned on only exploring Crystal Cave, but Francis was able to accommodate cave kayaking into our schedule as well. Both expeditions were amazing! I highly recommend you do both if you have the time. Jose was the most wonderful guide in Crystal Cave! Overall, our stay at Francis’s home was better than we could have imagined and played a huge part in making our first trip to Belize truly unforgettable. When we come back to this beautiful country, we know for sure where we’re staying!

P.S. Don’t forget to look up at the night sky, after the lights are turned off. You’ll be so glad you did!

Perfect place to escape!

We had an amazing 2 days at the Yaxche Jungle Camp. We stayed in one of the cabanas that have an ensuite  toilet and shower. They also have a bunkhouse for up to 10 (?) people. The cabanas have a  thatch roof, a small porch with a hammock and clothes line, wooden deck flooring, walls with screened upper sections and a mosquito net over the double bed. There was a 12" gap in netting at the bottom which had us a little concerned. After all, what's the point of netting if there's a big gap?  But I was able to adjust the attachment at the top to level it out and get the panels to overlap. We could see the ground below through the deck boards so we were worried about bugs at night but we were fine. 

There's no electricity in the cabanas but they provide battery powered LED light towers to use at night. We also had our own headlamps that came in handy for middle of the night bathroom runs. There's no hot water but the sun warmed the water pretty well during the day so it wasn't cold when we showered after returning from our tours in the late afternoon. I imagine the water would be much more "stimulating" first thing in the morning. 

Don't plan on sleeping in unless you're deaf or have good ear plugs. The jungle wakes up at about 5:30 AM and the birds go crazy.  We also heard a howler monkey in the distance. 
 
The place is in the middle of nowhere so you're going to have to eat there unless you have a car but the food was reasonably priced and excellent. It was traditional Belezian fare with the mandatory Marie Sharp's hot sauce on the table. 

We were dropped off by a driver but they can arrange transportation or there is a bus stop right at the end of their long drive off the Hummingbird Highway.

There is a place to charge your cameras/cell phones at the main palapa/office and they have mifi through their cell service that they turned on at breakfast so we could check for emails from work but they don't leave it on all the time.  Cell data is pretty expensive there. 
  
We did two day tours: cave kayaking and the Crystal Cave tour, both guided by Jose, who did a great job. He was very informative, adapted the tour to our interests and abilities and made sure we were safe. 

It was a great place to get away from it all and enjoy nature.

Great Natural Experience

Staying at the Yaxche Jungle Camp is a must experience for anyone traveling in the area. Staff and guides are genuine and treat guests extremely well. Cabanas were beautiful, food is delicious and excursion were top notch.

Jungle Fever!

We stayed at this jungle camp for 4 nights in February 2017.  We did not realize when we booked that we were going to be staying with a first class adventure guide and true gentleman full of history and wisdom.  His place is conveniently located just off the Hummingbird Highway but you feel like you are removed from the rest of the world and nestled deep in the jungle.  Howler monkeys and birds are your wake up calls.  We enjoyed one of the cabanas and had our breakfasts and dinners there.  Very tasty and thoughtfully displayed meals - reasonably priced.  So nice to not have to drive somewhere else to find a meal.  His place is very eco-friendly and is off the electricity grid. Solar panels charge batteries for the central eating area and you can charge your electrical devices there.  Bring your headlamps and a small torch/flashlight.  Both come in handy for your adventures and for late evening reading in your cabana and exploring on the property.  The shower water is tepid temperature which was actually refreshing when the outside temps are in the 80's+.  We went on 2 adventures with Marcos and his crew.  Jose' was one of the other amazing & knowledgable guides working with Marcos. Together they gave us two days of incredible experiences that we will never forget.  We went cave kayaking one day and Crystal Cave exploring another day.  Both very different from other tours offered in the country.  If you have done ATM (which we did later in our Belize trip), you still will want to book these trips with Marcos.  Marcos is extremely knowledgable, thoughtful, thorough, wise.  His command of history is amazing and we found we wanted to continually listen to his stories filled and facts and details with utmost respect for ancestry & cultures. We always felt we were in the best possible hands while exploring with Marcos and Jose.  They always focused and safety and security in every twist and turn of our days with them.

Marcos Is an Excellent Guide. His Accommodations are Great!

Such a great place to stay. We loved our cabana and the whole area. We took the local bus, got off when we saw the sign for the lodge and walked in. Marcos was still out on a tour so we went on a great little hike around the grounds for a great view from the top. The next day we did the Crystal Cave tour with Marcos which we highly recommend. Marcos is an incredible guide with a wealth of knowledge. My husband was even reading a book we found there and Marcos was named in the book as helping to discover the cave! He took us to swim at Blue Hole after. The food is also delicious. There really isn't anything else around so plan on eating there. I'm sure any tour they offer is fantastic. There are multiple horses, dogs, cats, and even geese. Watch out though, the geese did not like me ;)
