Sondela Guest Lodge

Sondela was a geat place to stay in Bulawayo for our family. Kirsten and the staff made us all  feel at home. The house
was spacious with a huge pool table that the kids loved! Breakfasts were generous and tasty and all our needs were catered for with a smile. 

We highly recommend Sondela, especially for families visiting Bulawayo.

If you don’t fancy luxurious hotels but prefer to enjoy the cosy environment of a family house, then Sondela is definitely your house and Rodney is your family. However, this doesn’t mean you’ll be squeezed in a tiny room, be waken up in the middle of the night by your next-door neighbour’s snoring or bump into other guests as soon as you move around! Absolutely not! The mansion is large and well preserved, all the rooms are spacious, quiet and comfortable, there’s plenty of ‘common’ place indoors as well as a lust garden with chickens and tortoises, plants and a swimming pool. And Rodney is the best host ever, friendly and knowledgeable about the area but reserved.
A final work about the food, just one: delicious!

Lovely old house presided over by Rod, a true gentleman, and his excellent staff. Large, comfortable rooms, a beautiful garden to relax in at the beginning and end of the day, and a well-stocked honest bar for sundowners. The home cooked food is great with hearty 'English' breakfasts and excellent dinner options. Lunch options (sandwiches) are also available if needed. It's relaxed, super comfortable and everyone is really welcoming. Fast WiFi and everyone bent over backwards to be welcoming and to help with all requests. Also, a short walk to the Natural History Museum of you fancy a little sight-seeing and very close to the rest of downtown too.

My childhood friend and I just spent 8 fabulous nights at Sondela Guest House when we visited Bulawayo, the city of our birth. It was a wonderful base for our wanderings and reminiscing and it was always great to come 'home' in the late afternoon for tea or a sundowner while watching the sunset. Our hosts, Rodney and Kirsty, couldn't have been more welcoming and gracious and we felt like we were with friends. The accommodations are very comfortable and the food was amazing. The staff are lovely and it was just pure delight. This is our second time staying here and we look forward to coming back. Highly recommended.

This is my third time staying at Sondela and right from the start it felt like home. Really cozy place with a big and beautiful garden. Rod, the owner, will greet you with a smile and help you with anything. All the staff are really friendly and helpful as well. I'll keep coming back!

This lodge and the welcoming owners and staff made our trip!! After hearing we wouldn't be able to experience African sites after working, the owner arranged for a great driver to spend the day showing us the sites and animal parks. Dinners were family-style and delicious and the included breakfast was always nice and filling for the day ahead. Chickens roam the large yard and I can't express enough how amazing the people are. The owner even secured us bus tickets and drove us personally to make sure we made the bus back to Harare safely. Would give 100 stars if possible.

Sondela must be one of the grandest houses in Bulawayo. Arriving you step into another age of colonial comfort and homeliness. Prudence and Rod made us so welcome and arranged an excellent dinner for 6 of us plus local friends who joined us for a private meal. Sondela is located close to the city centre and within walking distance of the Natural History museum (a must visit if you come to Bulawayo). Lovely gardens and swimming pool !

I am glad I had a car break down in Bulawayo otherwise wouldn’t  have found this beautiful place. Nestled in the leafy Suburbs area of Bulawayo and walking distance to city centre, I found this beautiful guest house, with charming interior decor and spacious rooms. The previous night I had stayed at Holiday Inn Bulawayo which is monotonous in style and there were no surprises, in contrast Sondela surprised me in every aspect. Every facade of the house has character and every piece of furniture seems to want to tell you a story. This is no exaggeration but that’s how I felt. The staff were very polite and helpful. The breakfast was fantastic and choice varied. I would definitely would love to stay there again. Only point of advice for the management is a website in future would help. Thanks for washing my car which was dirty in the morning.



The place is one of the best to be in Bulawayo,i was pleased by hospitality of their saff members and other facilities within this home.The room I used was excellent with properly functioning air-conditioning Don't worry about weather condition its all sorted there.Keep maintaining those good standards.

We loved staying in a house. In nature. Private and can see the next house through the bushes but not on ones doorstep. The students working at the different places are friendly and helpful. Public areas are well maintain and more than enough entertainment for young and old. A favourite place to go to for us as family or with friends. Chalets or houses or camping. You cant go wrong

Sondela is an elegant 1920's family home with 1970's updated bathrooms, lots of character, including the plumbing, electrics, Buddy the Jack Russell, Ron the owner and Prudence the manger / cook (both very friendly, welcoming and helpful).  Good full English breakfast with proper coffee (albeit UHT milk I think), and we also had a great roast dinner the evening we arrived.  We were in the smaller family room the first night and they kindly upgraded us the second night to a room with a/c (not that we needed it).  Comfortable beds.  Big garden and pool.  Baby tortoises.  Honesty bar.  Lemon for your gin and tonic.  What more could anyone want?
