The Castle Lodge

- Excellent hospitality

- The security system in place is wonderful and the officer i found on duty gave me the best reception of him.

-The food prepared is amazing and the place its self is habitable and next to sweet home

If you are after a family welcome, this is the place to come. This family run Lodge provides a relaxed atmosphere where you feel like you are part of the family. It is a lodge and not a luxury hotel. Make yourself at home, have a laugh with the staff and you will enjoy your stay so much more. I stay here every time I visit Ndola.

Harmony and Peace dwells at Castle lodge in Ndola

This has the potential to be a great hotel - but it somehow felt like a 5 star hotel from the 80s that had been left to fall into disrepair and was (just about) holding on for dear life in 2017.
First impressions look great, a really impressive building with a bar and restaurant on 2 levels, private car park, an outside pool and spacious luxurious rooms. But once you look closer it doesn't seem so good. The bathroom was separate from our 2 rooms but there was no one else staying on our floor so felt like our own. Unfortunately the shower didn't provide any hot water other than a dribble at best. However there sounded like there was a waterfall outside the bathroom window all night - no idea where the water was coming from or going to - however it certainly wasn't flowing through the shower! The decor was very 1970s, if anyone has seen the film of The Shining you would think you were there.
The bedroom was advertised as air conditioned, but I couldn't see any method of cooling the room, other than what looked like a gap in the ceiling where a unit had been in the past. Not that it mattered as it wasn't that warm at night. There was a tray laid out with coffee, tea, sugar, cups etc on it. Unfortunately there was no kettle or method of getting any hot water in the room, but at least the thought was there...
The hotel was also advertised as having wifi. We asked for this on arrival, after some delay the person behind the desk told us there was, but asked us if we could wait until the following day to have it. On explaining that we were leaving the following morning they eventually (on the third time of asking) provided us with a dongle which gave us very good wifi for an hour or two.
The menu we were given at the bar in the evening was printed on a piece of A4 paper that looked like it had gone through a washing machine and then been flattened back into shape. Several of the options had been crossed out in pen and there were some random recipes and a shopping list on the back, written in pen. We just asked for staple dishes, and the 2 veggies with us asked for a veggie curry each (although not on the "menu") which was actually very nice.
The breakfast the following morning was served in a large area below the bar (bizarre because it has seating probably for 60-70 people yet the hotel only seems to have 6 rooms). It wasn't very nice - there was bread and a couple of cereals available but little else. And because we were the only people in the room, the woman serving breakfast just seemed to stare at us all the time, a little off-putting! I also don't recommend the apricot jam.
This is a really difficult place to review. Because when you look at every individual point it all seems rubbish, but as a whole it was actually quite an entertaining and pleasant place to stay. The breakfast, pool and bathroom are all pretty low points, but the size and look of the place, the location, the potential it has all seem to make up for that. It could have been one star, it could have been four - and I suspect back in its heyday was five...

What would once have been a splendid hotel is now, sadly slightly run down, however it is still a nice place to stay. Staff are friendly and very helpful and the rooms pleasant. Dinner was very nice. Food is ordered in the kitchen and the menu was limited. There were no vegetarian options but the chef quickly gave me some options and made a delicious veg curry and rice. Food did take quite a long time to arrive. Breakfast wasn't such a great affair- very limited choice. I would stay there again- good value for money and a quirky place.
