Called in for a quiet pint and arranged to meet a friend in the front bar, noticed the decor looking a bit tired and the upholstery was a bit shabby. As the only customer in the bar I had the room to myself, picked my phone up to check for messages and was told, very brusquely, that use of electronic devices was not allowed, now I don’t have a problem with this, in fact I approve strongly of the idea that pubs should be havens of peace and quiet and that talking loudly on a phone can be a real intrusion. However
I was alone 
I was not talking and had no intention of doing so 
But my main complaint is that the pub had a large notice outlining Sam Smiths “No swearing Policy” but nothing to indicate that running your fingers up and a touch screen was forbidden. I took a very dim view of being scolded in public (there were customers in the adjacent bar who heard the dressing down) and I found the whole episode humiliating. Positive the “No Swearing policy” proved its worth. Negative If you are going to be so nitpicking about the ambience in your pubs, at least try and serve a decent pint as compensation.

Not that pleased

we popped in to get out of the rain. Lovley real fires locals freindly and freindly staff. quite refreshing no technology aloud so had to talk to people. So no mobiles aloud brewery policy, signs around the pub saying this. It seems alot of pubs are doing this now not just sams. Unfortunately, couple of ladies in the front bar did'nt like it, but its the brewery rules, so why take it out on the staff. anyway we enjoyed ourselves. Great time, good beer and real fires what more do you want.

We visited this place as we were lost and soaked through from the rain. We wanted to get a hot drink, warm up, and find our bearings. We were greeted by a rude, blue haired lady. We asked if we could have a cup of tea, and she said no because she was short staffed. I then asked for sparkling water and a coke. No sparkling water, and then was advised they have coke, but its not proper coke. Tonic water and a dodgy coke were ordered.
We sat down and got our phones out so we could work out how to get back to the train station only for the blue haired lady to shout at us and say no technology. I politely said we were lost. Could we just get our bearings? She said no and that we would have to go back outside in the freezing rain.
This has to be the worst place I have ever encountered. I would definitely avoid like the plague.

The bedroom was huge, the beds were comfy and everywhere was clean. We read the website info before going so knew it is a digital detox chain so we went prepared with an iPad for watching tv in the room after we spent some time in the family lounge playing cards, having chats and enjoying a drink (or 2). The value for money on this place is excellent and I will happily use the hotel again! Just a 10 minute walk from the main tourist part of York. My only slight grumble is the road noise but that was more down to inconsiderate drivers treating the road outside like a race track between 11pm and 1am (ish). Sash windows just aren’t designed for keeping screeching car noise out.

Stayed for races, good stay friendly staff  management. Clean tidy friendly local.
The only problem was three blokes that couldn't stick to sams rules, and were looking for trouble. By the sounds of it they've been before so why come again ??? If they don't like it. I guess " backwards and dirty " review was theres as a type of revenge how childish can you get. the staff and management handled it well. Well done all. Thanks for a great stay.

Good stay pitty about other visitors 

we stayed here for a few days to visit family and enjoy historic york. we were not expecting a great deal at the hotel but was pleasently surprised. friendy welcome from the staff/management. real fires made the place feel homely, the beer was excellent the best pint of old brewery i've had in a long time. the locals were very chatty. 
when we went to our room we were quite happy, clean, tidy and warm, beds are really comfy the room / bathroom were spotless, the bathroom look brand new. breakfast was good cerials, full english, toast, juice tea coffee prompt service so we were not hanging around.
the only drawback is sam smiths rule not tech down in the pub, no tv in the rooms, but who goes away to watch tv. they have free wifi so you can stream if you want to in your room. but at the end of the day to much to do in york to be messing around streaming in your room. had a great time will be back

Chose this place because of the cheapness, but it wasn’t that cheap and would rather pay more in future and stay somewhere comfortable and clean. We know about Sam Smith’s policies, so we were ready for all the rules. No eating in bedrooms allowed, fair enough, but found shrivelled old chip under the double bed. 

Our room was over the boiler house, so getting a good night’s sleep was impossible. Totally unacceptable that this room is let at all. The ‘room’ was two rooms, but the you had to go through the single room to get to the bathroom, so not really two rooms at all.

The breakfast was awful. No cereal, no fruit, no yogurt. Just pre poured orange juice going warm at preset tables. No brown bread! No poached eggs. Only a greasy and very mediocre full English available. The coffee was served in a tiny cup and you have to keep asking for a refill. 

The managers, a couple, are VERY heavy smokers and vapers and breakfast, such as it is, is served in a massive rush so that they can get outside and smoke - again. 

The pub/hotel is handy for the Barbican if that is the purpose of your visit. There’s a great Indian restaurant and a fabulous Chinese restaurant on the same road as the pub.

But like I said, we wouldn’t stay again, regardless of the price. It just isn’t worth it. 



Noisy room and unappetising breakfast. 

Another stay at the Seahorse, again fabulous stay good breakfast clean and warm rooms. Management and staff brilliant nice coal fires ( real aswell)  near the town centre 2mins walk to barbican round corner. Even free parking which is a bonus. Cheers guys

ANOTHER GREAT STAY

Great few days stay and a great little gem found in York. Very cost effective for a stay in that area, 10 mins or so to city centre. Very good breakfast and the Landlords were very good and tentative as well. Comfy spacious room, comfy bed, heating great, clean, tidy, and would definitely stay again. Free parking too... Happy teddy, :-)

Great Stay in York...

After visiting this pub over the last few weeks we decided to book our relatives into the hotel whilst they were visiting York. We initially thought the pub was cosy and the staff were pleasant, these pleasant staff are probably the ones who get the good reviews. This instantly changed on meeting the management couple. The first occasion we overheard the female manager constantly pick fault with the young member of staff serving behind the bar. She didn't seem to have a good word to say about anyone and it was obvious she was talking negatively about some of the regulars. She also said that she wanted a different pub because she hates doing the b&b side but Humphrey won't let her. I thinks this reflects in her terrible attitude towards customers and staff. It was too late to cancel the booking at this point but things got much worse on night our relatives stayed over. One of our party closed the back door of the pub because there was a draft blowing in the bar. Within 30 secs the phone in the bar rung and the member of staff went and closed the door. It was obvious at this point that the manager was monitoring the CCTV. After enjoying excellent service and food at the Indian restaurant next door we returned to the pub, the managers were not in the bar area when we got there. A member of our party put some coal on the fire and again the phone rang within a second and the barman asked them not to put coal on the fire which is fair enough, however, moments later the manager came barging in and rudely said 'you don't put coal on the fire'. It's not what she said but how she said it which was very abrupt and rude. A bit later my 81 year old father in law and his son started singing not loudly a nostalgic Nat King Cole song which the manager really didn't like and said 'you can't sing in here' when asked why she said 'it's a digital detox pub'. I'm confused. What has singing got to do with it being a no-tech pub and why was she so rude about it? This is the most backward place I've ever been and I've drank in Sam Smith's pubs for 20 years so that is saying something. By the way the rooms were unclean and surprise surprise no full breakfast in the morning because the oven wasn't working! Utter disgrace. I think the only reason why she is still running the place after 12 years is because Sam Smith's brewery can't get anybody to manage their pubs for love nor money hence why so many of them are closed but need this hotel to stay open to take advantage of poor unsuspecting customers from out of the area that aren't aware of the culture of contempt towards people that the managers and the brewery promote.
