My husband and I visited The Samling for our 20th Wedding Anniversary. We had The Windermere Suite which was beautiful and very clean. The team are very attentive, friendly but professional. As we arrived they rushes out with umbrellas as it was pouring.

We had the tasting menu with wine pairing in the restaurant which was delicious and an excellent pairing.

100% recommend for a special occasion.

Beautiful location, excellent suites, delicious food!

We spent 5 nights at The Samling for our honeymoon and had the most wonderful time there. We were treated like family by the staff and were made to feel so comfortable and relaxed after the wedding frenzy! The tasting menu experience was out of this world and the nights spent dining from The Gathering menu were equally enjoyable. Our highlight has to be drinking cocktails in the hot tub and enjoying views of Windermere. It was perfection and we will definitely return, possibly for our anniversary.

Perfect Honeymoon

The Samling was the top of our list for our next return trip to the lakes, so we though we would pop in for a drink and book lunch for the next day before we headed back to London. Safe to say following an unwelcoming experience we are glad we never booked here for this trip and won’t return. Being denied entry to the bar because the restaurant is full which means that all staff are in the restaurant however the bar is not closed… the excuse left us both confused. I didn’t expect this from a hotel at this level and I could have completely understood if there was a private function taking place but this was not the case, so I can only conclude that non residents are just not really welcome at this hotel. Perhaps this is my lack of understanding of the area and is a local policy that we are not used to when visiting 5* hotels in London.

Non residents not welcome

Had lunch at this beautiful hotel with friends yesterday.  Amazing views of the surrounding countryside and the sun was shining!!  Very friendly staff both at the front desk and restaurant, attentive but never intrusive.  The food was excellent and the wine chosen by the sommelier was perfect. We will definitely be back.

Excellent

We visited the hotel for the weekend and was without doubt a really lovely experience. The setting for the hotel is very centrally situated with great views of the lake, our room had everything that you needed in it and was beautiful and clean. We dined in the restaurant all weekend with the food and wine being top quality but nothing stood out as much as the staff their, they had a wonderful way of making us feel at home with their relaxed approach. We’re definitely going back it’s a great hotel

Sampling experience

We had the fixed price menu at the Reverie which is offered for lunch.  The setting was along a path from the main restaurant and hotel. The common areas of the property and views over the lake were beautiful. The service was very good. However, the menu and food offerings were disappointing. As a step down from their Michelin One Star we were not expecting a one star meal or experience. But the offerings were nothing special. For example, one choice for a main was simply Chicken Caesar Salad. For the price we were paying we expected a great deal more. And, to make matters worse, the items we ended up ordering were not that good. We cannot recommend this restaurant for lunch. As an alternative, a nice pub with a view of the lake would be a better choice.  

Reverie Restaurant -- Disappointing Meal

Average to below on food and service. We are a group of 4 hotel owners in windermere. We try different places to recommend to our guests. We tried the Gathering and we’re left a bit disappointed after experiencing ave food to below . We asked not to pay the service charge and then the mood changed and we had to find our coats that had been taken from us at the start. We won’t be adding the Gathering to our list of recommendations in the area.

FIVE STAR country house experience. Loved the breakfast with such views!eve meal 10/10. All staff so lovely (an extra 10/10 to the lovely helpful girl Beth)
Room so immaculately clean and well styled. Didn't want to leave. Stayed just before in a 5 star in The Dordogne area of France and was no where near the welcome, service, food. Totally Recommend.

5 star beautiful big airy country house, amazing views, food & service...

The vegetarian choice on the menus is nothing short of shocking. I had expected better from a place that prides itself on its food offering. 

ONE option on each section of each menu for vegetarians - and not even appetising options at that. 

Also, as seems to be the norm, the ‘Sunday Roast’ menu offers no roast at all for Vegetarian diners - just a mushroom pasta dish to pacify them while everyone else is enjoying a lovely roast. How can it be that I can cook a full roast at home, and the only thing my wife misses while loading her plate up is the meat. Roast tatties, Yorkshire puddings, cauliflower cheese, carrots & swede, greens, gravy. A feast. 

Surely it cannot be beyond the capability of the chef to produce more than just a ‘Hobson’s Choice’ for vegetarian diners on each menu, plus a roast without the meat??!!

Poor show for vegetarians

Booked the tasting menu in this fabulous restaurant and I can say it is the best dining experience I’ve ever had. The ambience, the scenery, the staff, the menu and most of all the food. Every course was amazing, food at its very best. Lisa looked after us and explained every dish, she was so professional and knowledgeable. 
It was a birthday treat but will certainly be back again before my next birthday. Thank you to all the team, your simply the best.
