The Steer Inn

We only stayed one night at the Steer Inn, but we were greeted warmly by Darin and his wife, despite our late arrival of 10 pm.  Darin spent much time with us, providing instruction and directions as to where to go to see the Grand Depart of the Tour de France, knowing that 2 million other people had also arrived in the area for the same purpose. We enjoyed local beer that night and a wonderful "full English breakfast" in the morning. Room was clean with all amenities provided. The water pressure was somewhat low, but certainly was sufficient enough to shower.

"Tour de France Eve"

Sorry for yet another pun, but a sense of humour is required if you stay here. Like many before us we seemed to have landed at the Steer Inn because every other option was booked, this time for the York Marathon weekend. Despite reading earlier less than glowing reviews on Tripadvisor, I thought "How bad could it be?" 

Small room and bath: expected.  Hot water tank/boiler from hell next to room 1:  I could never have imagined.  Around 11 pm we heard the strangest sloshing noise that sounded like someone playing around in a bath tub.  Since most baths last maybe 30 minutes at most, I did not worry too much.  However, the loud sloshing, gurgling sounds persisted throughout the night. Then I thought it must be a dish washer or laundry. It is was only when I went on a search around maybe 5 am  to pull the plug on the dishwasher/washing machine did I discover a cupboard on the first floor with the offending hot water tank.

Bum steer!

Booked last minute as this was the only accommodation available.
We were greeted by the  owner with
"Your in Room 11 upstairs. that's the door with a 1 and another 1 on it"  Ha ha ha !

Well at £70 a night for a double room with supposed en-suite, we were at least expecting a room big enough to be able move around in. WRONG
It was the smallest double room I have ever seen. There was about 18 inches of leg room either side of the creaky double bed, to the walls of the bedroom and a sliding door that revealed the en-suite. How they managed to fit a shower, basin and toilet in to such a small space was quite a feat but sharing ones seated ablutions some 2 feet away from your partner lying in bed on the other side of the partition wall is not the most romantic of settings and the fact that the expelair didn't work heightened the fragrant romanticism!!
Well it was too late to get anywhere else and things couldn't really get any worse, could they?

After a brilliant evening at a York House concert, with Kal Lavelle, Jake Morley and Antonio Lulic,  we returned to the STEER CLEAR and our cupboard on the first floor. Well at least we could catch the back end of Match of the Day on the 14 inch flat screen TV , which was clearly in proportion with the rest of the surroundings. Unfortunately every move on the squeaky bed drowned out the commentary and the noise from the generators outside provided stereo mayhem. 
Oh dear, I needed to use the facilities again.
"No way, you can get yourself to the toilet downstairs"
I went in to the Dining Room - TOILET OUT OF ORDER -

Well after the most uncomfortable night in the cupboard, we managed to shuffle past each other and get dressed but decided to give the mouldy shower a miss. Breakfast time.
We were first in and ordered 2 cooked breakfasts. Help yourself to juice, cereal and tea/coffee etc. 
Ah, it was the piece of bread that was stuck in the toaster that was causing the fog in the dining room.
Nice cooked breakfast to be fair but time to leave and never to return.
Be warned this place is unclean and  at £70 a night they are robbing people .
DONT GO unless there are dramatic changes made

Steer Inn ? STEER CLEAR !!!

Didn't receive a warm welcome and immediately felt out of place. Room was unclean with dirty coffee cups. Arrived back after an evening out and there was a disco going on in the conservatory which was very loud! Not quite sure what this place is trying to be disco / b&b / youth club? Over priced and not a good experience, didn't bother with the breakfast.we just left as soon as we awoke and got ready.

Poor Standards

this place is unclean, unkept, tired, run down, expensive and overall the staff have not one ounce of customer service. We booked a FAMILY room to stay at after a wedding reception, could easily have drove home after, but thought we would have a treat and stay over ... didn't expect what happened next!! on returning to the 'hotel' (10.30pm)we found only what we can describe as an underage drinking rave! Our family room was situated above the conservatory rave, when we politely asked ' could we be moved so our daughter (3) could sleep, we were told 'music off at 12, dont like it see ya later' or words to that effect!!! so we returned upstairs packed our case and on walking to our car was hurled with abuse from 1 staff member in particular and others! felt very threatened especially as all this happened infront of our 3 year old daughter who was distraught!!! was offered no alternative room, no money refund all we had was 'its business'!! Please do not ever think of booking this 'hotel' it was an eventful evening which will not be recovered from easily!
