We stayed for just one night and it was perfect! We parked, (signed the car in), had some lunch in the bar and had an amazing walk through Padley Gorge. We booked in to the restaurant for dinner. The food was fantastic! Beautiful food and good portion sizes. The waiting staff were very friendly and helpful. The room was very comfortable.  Breakfast was delicious too. We will hopefully come back again! Highly recommended.

Wonderful short stay!

I booked a nights stay for my husbands birthday via booking.com. What a fabulous find. Lovely room with stunning countryside views. Large comfy bed, every need catered to. We had a wonderful evening meal, and breakfast the following morning was brilliant. Staff are so attentive and friendly. Couldn’t fault it at all.

Perfect night away!

We had the best time at The Maynard. Comfortable rooms with every facility. Breakfasts and food, were always of a high standard. All Staff were warm and welcoming, nothing too much trouble. We had wonderful views of the garden and Grindleford. Excellent walks from the door

Wonderful place to Stay

We had a Lovely relaxing night away, The staff were very accommodating and polite, especially the younger members of the team. The rooms are spotless and very tastefully decorated The food was excellent, especially the breakfast. The location is perfect for walks from the hotel.

Relaxing night away

We were recommended the Maynard by a friend and found it to be a wonderful hotel. We stayed for two nights and were really impressed with our room, the food and the staff, all contributing to e lovely stay. I hope we will be returning.

A lovely break

Food wasn’t worth the £18-£24 price for Sunday lunch .
One meal was cold and had to be sent back . 
Waitresses brought us 1 meal which was meant for another table in error so the rest of us had to wait for ours so we ate at different times . 
We had to ask several times for condiments.
There wasn’t enough food . 

We decided to try this place after seeing an article about it online .
We drove 50 minutes and were excited to try somewhere new for Sunday lunch but wouldn’t return again . 
The food was nice , but nothing spectacular for the price . 


Over priced

The Maynard has everything going for it. Lovely country house feel and a beautiful location. The restaurant staff are friendly and efficient and the food is to die for. We came to celebrate a family engagement and had a wonderful time (and spent a heap of money) HOWEVER 8 days later I received a parking fine of £60/£100. When I rang The Maynard they immediately rescinded it but told me I should have seen at least one of the 15 notices they apparently have in the car park. It was dark and I didn't. None of the reception staff asked us to check in our registration. So....go there, Enjoy the fab food and drink but for goodness sake don't forget to enter your vehicle registration. 

A sour taste

We stayed here mid week for 1 night DBB.

The hotel: situated on a main road & near train station for travel to Manchester or Sheffield. On site parking & available for guests & patrons (enter car details inside). The front of house staff gave us a very warm welcome, answered all our queries, were engaging & efficient. Our room was OK, not wow, but clean, adequate & a little on the small side. The bed, however, was super comfy. We had an issue with our room on arrival & although not resolved, everyone did their absolute best to resolve the issue for us 👏 We slept OK but there is noise from the road, the train ‘tooting’ before going into Totley Tunnel & the small bin compound in the top car park which seemed to used right up to 11pm. 

The food: our evening meal was excellent. The menu IMO is quite eclectic, some modern & some very traditional choices. We eat mainly plant based at home so my partner filled up on ox tongue & liver! My miso starter plate & Arancini main were very good & the food presentation was superb. The refurbished restaurant is a lovely eating space, with a great selection of intimate & family tables. The choice of drinks was varied, nice to see local produce, eg. Lukas ale & Franklins tonic & at last somewhere that serves 0% gin. Breakfast was OK, the highlight was the eggs, the sourdough was not great & the coffee was very weak, however, the usual choices you would expect were available.

The staff: perfection! Absolutely everyone that we interacted with were friendly, helpful & went out of their way to ensure we had a good stay with great food. I have never before come across such positive consistency in customer service. The staff throughout The Maynard were all exceptional. The most outstanding was the colleague with a long blond plait in the restaurant in the evening, they were outstanding.

Would we stay again - no, sadly not for us, too many niggles with the room & location.

Would we eat again - 100% yes.

The hotel has a very good pamphlet of local walks available. We walked up to White & Froggatt Edge (8 miles, 3 hrs, easy walking) Hathersage is a 10 min drive away, nice small village to spend an hour wandering around. Nothing much in Grindleford itself so unless you’re walking, you need the car.

Warm Welcome & Good Food

We was attending a wedding and stopped the night, only to find they had inflated the price to £153 for one night,  (just because there was a wedding) while it was on booking for £82 
We pointed this out but was told the price was wrong on booking.com (it wasn’t wrong)
Drinks was also well over priced at the bar over £18 for two large gin and tonics and £26.50 for an cheap bottle of wine 
At breakfast if you want a latte that’s an extra £4 

The super king beds are just two beds pushed together 
The room was clean but had paint flaking and marks on the walls 

On a good note, the breakfast was fantastic one of the best we’ve had 

So if you like to be ripped off and over charged this is the place for you

Rip off

The room we had, with breakfast, was very good value for money. Very nice ambiance. The evening meal we had was lovely too, especially the trio of pies. All the staff we encountered were very friendly. The hotel is situated in a good location for walkers. Definitely use it again.
