This is the third time we have visited this pub and this last visit did not disappoint.
We are group of mainly retired lawyers, doctors, surveyors and architects who meet for walks roughly monthly. We were a group of ten who arrived for bacon rolls and coffees/teas at 08.30, walked Hambledon Hill and then the former Somerset and Dorset railway line back through the preserved Shillingstone station and thence back to The Saxon Inn, where we had a splendid lunch (the crab salad was delightful) Nothing was too much trouble for Sarah and her helpful team. Well done all!  Thoroughly recommended.

We stayed here 4 nights in the Super Kingsize bedroom. Overlooking the garden. Very peaceful stay. The garden is used by guests on Wednesday-Sunday lunchtime. Other days the restaurant & bar is closed. Sarah is extremely accommodating to any requests ie:- breakfast to staying guests on closed days. 
Sarah is a wonderful host who made us feel so welcome & her food is so tasty. No one gets out hungry from here!
The decor & furniture is cosy & homely. It’s in a cute little village which gives easy access to surrounding areas. We had such a lovely stay here.
I would definitely recommend people to stay & use the restaurant.

Cannot recommend highly enough!

We stayed for one night whilst walking the Wessex Ridgeway. The room was superb and the food was excellent. A lot of time and effort has been made to make this a special pub, a real personal touch, with great flair. The dogs were made to feel very welcome.

Excellent Value.. good food, clean rooms decent beer and, unusually,  they managed to get the bill spot on for the 4 of us! Well worth a  visit for a meal or a stayover in an area of outstanding natural beauty

We stayed overnight as we were cycling from Bath to Bournemouth. The room was very clean and the beds and crisp bedding were extremely comfortable. Breakfast was first class as well. Just as we’re about to leave I had a puncture.  The chap who runs it, I think it was Tom, was fantastic and helped me by patching and sorting it. The couple who run it could not be friendlier and more helpful. He honestly saved the day really with his help with that puncture. Thank you so much for your help and for a great stay. 

Stayed an extra night it was that good. Hosts were very welcoming and food excellent. Rooms clean tidy and very comfortable would highly recommend the Saxon to anyone. The Inn it self is set in a wonderful village at the bottom of The NationalTrust Hambledon Hill excellent for walkers 


After we parked up we were given a lovely welcome by the staff and shown to our room which was bigger than we expected and lovely and airy. After my wife had "made camp" we moved down to the bar and met some friendly locals for a chat and some delicious food (just starters as we'd pigged out in Avebury earlier that lunchtime). 
My wife had the tomato and chorizo soup, and I had the classic prawn cocktail, and after a few more drinks we retired to bed for a good night's sleep.
In the morning we were treated to a fantastic breakfast of our choice (if you like a full English, you can design your own, they'll provide it with a smile!).
We were also lucky enough to say hello to their doggo too, who's name iirc was Merlin!

Great service , great food . Went the extra mile to accommodate my wife’s vegetarian requirements. I had roast lamb and the meat nearly filled the plate . Ample veg and roast potatoes . Highly recommended.

Whilst due to altered ferry arrangements we had missed evening meal but Sarah said she would lay on a cold platter .2 round of bread,4 small pieces of cheese 2 pats of butter and 4 slices of palma ham £30!!!!. Spoilt a.lovely overnight stay. large  car park but crush and run compound leaves shoes and pawd very dirty.not sure if would stop again in this out of the way spotlessly clean out of the way and off route great old Inn. Has just 3 smaller bedroom and 1 larger . Dog friendly place too

A good but wrong choice to over night stay from Poole after the ferry.

A last minute hiccup meant we had to head out for dinner. Being local I know many places either shut early or don’t serve food on Sunday evenings so headed to the Saxon. First time visiting. Friendly welcome, nice clean pub. Menu is standard pub grub, but when we received our meals all of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. Fully recommend.

Just a review for a lunch here ** Please ignore Room-rating as we didn't stay. 
Had our Sunday lunch here during a long weekend in the area. 
There's a few good pubs to chose from around here thankfully, but this one came through as our choice for our Roast Dinner. 
Good selection of beer (I had 6X) & a few non-standard dishes on the menu. 
We both opted for a Turkey Roast which was delicious, served with a Yorkshire Pudding & parsnip shavings + cauli/carrots/broccoli & a thick, creamy gravy. 
Friendly locals, we walked in to smiles so very welcoming. 
Fast, friendly, efficient service.

Traditional pub serving good food.

Very charming place set back from the quiet village lane.
On a damp winter's day the open log fire went down well.
Staff friendly and helpful and very efficient.
Plenty of choice on the menu with a good specials board.
Good value for money and if I had a negative, the only thing I would say is that my rump steak was a little fatty.
All in all a pleasant visit and a place I would come back to again.

Friendly owners, great food, clean rooms!

Stayed for one night in The Saxon Inn with my husband and young daughter. Lovely place, room spacious, clean and comfortable. Had dinner there on arrival and the food was very good with and an excellent variety of vegetarian and children's choices. Very good breakfast next morning. Beautiful part of England. Would highly recommend.

Lovely stay at Saxon Inn

We decided to get away from the crowds heading to the beach yesterday and went for a lovely river walk starting at Fiddleford. We took a short diversion at Child Okeford and stopped at the Saxon Inn for lunch. We received a friendly welcome, there was a good range of ales and ciders. We both had food from the specials board. 
The pub was lovely and clean and our lunch delicious. We will definitely go there again but next time it will be with friends and for dinner.
