I'm a local to this pub,  changed hands over the years the new owners really have updated this well loved pub, food great, atmosphere great would definitely recommend, big thumbs up from steve and Sharon defo revisit over the Christmas time xx

Stayed in Devon for a wedding. What a great find , minutes from station , very welcoming hosts Lindsay and Andy, and had a good chat in the bar with the locals. Great food , fish and chips locally caught and super fresh. Good breakfast too ..Nice room and bathroom/ shower. Couldn’t ask for more

My wife and I visited the Rising Sun for lunch with friends. My cod and chips was excellent. Definitely fresh and really tasty. My wife had the ribs and they were also excellent. The service was really good and the pub was welcoming and had a great atmosphere. I would definitely go baand even stay there.

Fabulous pub, so friendly, great rooms. Amazing food for dinner and breakfast. Stunning area over looking the river! From the moment we checked in Lindsey and staff were so friendly, home from home. Had a lovely atmosphere the Friday night, we only stayed one night but we are definitely going back! Amazing fish and chips.

We came here for some dinner on our visit to Devon as a late night meal and it didn’t disappoint! Portion sizes are huge, food delicious and it’s a lovely atmosphere with fantastic hosts. Lots of info about local produce ect. Would definitely return!

We stayed at this pub as we recently had a personal tragedy, so the circumstances, and the way my husband and I felt, weren’t ideal! Our hosts were so kind and considerate, and we had a delicious fish and chip supper and a few drinks in the pub - the meal was really delightful and cooked very well. Our bedroom was extremely comfortable and spotless. The large bathroom had a huge free standing bath tub in it, and I had a lovely relaxing bath; gorgeous thick fluffy towels were provided.  The bed was incredibly comfortable with a great mattress and quality bed linen. I enjoyed a very well cooked breakfast the following morning- my husband just had toast - all in all a very comfortable stay with great service and deliciously cooked food - all at a great price!  Thank you both so much for your hospitality at what was a very difficult time. Laura & Patrick

A beautiful old inn with lots of character. My room was comfortable and had everything I needed, plus a few wonderful extras. It was very clean and stylishly decorated, in-keeping with the aesthetic of the area and character of the building. 
The staff were very helpful, friendly and attentive.
The full English breakfast was good quality and served quickly. I was able to help myself to toast, fruit and croissant. 
Highly recommended for a country getaway. You could not ask for more! Thank you for a lovely stay.  

Always good food and a friendly crowd…nice to see a family run pub done right. Menu has a great choice but my favourite is the cod and chips which are always great; fresh as can be and cooked perfectly.



Beautiful inn and great staff we will be back. The best boozer in Umberleigh  Lindsey and Andy are fab hosts. The food is good value and the atmosphere is welcoming

Great pub with delightful rooms in Umberleigh, Devon

A fisherman's inn close to the River Taw in North Devon. This is a fine old inn which has been modernised (work is continuing). The acccommodation was excellent, a decent sized bedroom and shower room (thank you!) and good food, morning and evening. The Rising Sun is set on an A road but there is plenty of peace at night. The hosts are friendly and continuing to modernise and upgrade. Recommended, even for non-fishers!

Fantastic stay!

A delightful little pub/hotel nestled in the centre of the village of Umberleigh. The stay was outstanding, a genuinely all round great stay with picturesque scenery. The staff are extremely welcoming, attentive and friendly. The food both breakfast and dinner were exceedingly good quality and well down all too easily. The rooms and charming rustic aesthetic with very comfortable beds you can sink into their softness. Plus a fantastic spot out front for nice drink with a serene view of rolling hills, typical of the Devonshire country side. Highly recommended.

Lovely little pub

What a fabulous little place, a very warm welcome, even though we were running late. We phoned ahead, told not to worry they would keep the kitchen open. Had a nice meal. As for the room, so comfy and quirky, uneven floors, big bed, great bathroom. If you want a plastic sterile palace, this is not the place for you. If you want character and a great breakfast just book it.

A cracking little find.

Stayed for 2 nights. As a genuine Coaching Inn from (I think) the 1600s there's not a straight wall, floor or ceiling in the place! It's gorgous. 

I stayed in Beaver which is at the front on the river side. Bed was great & linen top quality along with a lovely shower and, rare these days, top quality free toiletries. 

Spent a bit of time with my drinks at the front staring up at the endless stars - just contemplating.

Breakfast was super as was the attentiveness of the landlord & landlady. Only had one evening meal - ham egg & chips (it's a fav of mine). I have never ever not finished my fav dish but here the cut of ham was so generous I simply couldn't! I understand everything is genuinely local and it tasted like it - just sublime.

Great value, great service, great place. I'll be back...

If you hate 'sterile' accommodation, chose the Rising Sun

We were very impressed with this Inn.  We stayed 3 nights and enjoyed the food and the stay.  Our room was very comfortable and the bath had huge, nice towels and a heated towel rack.  I would recommend trying to get a room that did not face the road and bridge with lots of traffic.  The staff was amazing and we had a very nice, fresh cooked full English breakfast each morning.

Lovely Inn and Pub

Such a friendly atmosphere, clean room and what an amazing sleep, bed and pillows were so comfortable i want to buy some lol! 
Food basic pub grub, not fancy but served quickly and very helpful and kind.
Local people also very welcoming.
The owners though quite new to the place  have really got a great start with the place, will definitely revisit.
