Hotel Albula

On a recent trip on the Bernina Express, my wife and I decided to do a one night stopover in a quaint village along the line and chose the town of Bergun as our destination due to its wonderful position in the lap of the Alps. We couldn't have planned it any better. We made a blind reservation for a stay at Hotel Albula on Hotels.com based on what were only two reviews listed (both positive) and the room rate was the best we found among the few other locations listed in Bergun. We arrived to find the hotel within easy walking distance to the train station and were warmly welcomed by the staff who alerted us in our room when a table was ready downstairs in the hotel's restaurant. Our room was very clean and had ample room for the both of us and thermostat controlled room heater which allowed us to fine tune the temperature for our comfort. As for the restaurant, my preference is generally not to eat at the same location I am staying at to help broaden our experience, but given the lateness in hour of our arrival by train, we opted to have dinner at the hotel. As it turned out, the cuisine was amazing, perhaps even one of the better meals we had on our European vacation. They had a wonderful selection of wines and beer to accompany their menu of well prepared regional cuisine. The staff too was very helpful despite their need to accommodate our ability to speak in only English and a few words of poorly accented German. As for location, Bergun is nicely situated in a valley surrounded by amazing high country and glaciated peaks. Hiking trails are easy to located and well marked, along with Bergun having a couple simple ski lifts operations in place as well for those wanting something more relaxed than St. Moritz in the winter. Overall, if traveling through this region, I can't recommend this location or hotel enough.
