New Sunrise Hotel

The hotel is tucked out of the way on the peninsula portion of the city. This meant that tuktuks were necessary to go anywhere. We were able to walk to the beach but the wind was very strong and the waves were extremely high. We requested an upper floor room and were glad that we did. We were at the far end of the hotel above the kitchen. We had a spacious room which was clean but the bathroom had a rather unpleasant odour when we arrived. The bed was comfortable and there was a mosquito net. There was a fan and air conditioning. The tv only had Sri Lanka channels. There was a good hot water shower. We had a large balcony seating area with chairs and a table. It was very pleasant and so we spent a fair amount of time sitting out there. There was room service and so we had breakfast every morning and a dinner on our balcony. All meals were very good. The dining area looked as if the roof might cave in so we chose not to eat there. The grounds were quite big and had scattered benches to sit on and were landscaped however no one seems to be taking care of them and so they are falling into disrepair. Once upon a time it must have been very nice. There is a large pool and a hot tub but it wasn't working. The pool area also needs some care. While we were there there was a party at the pool area with live music that was very loud and went on until about 11:00 pm. The next day there was an all day meeting of businessmen who were doing team building activities in the courtyard. There was also a group of men who spent the afternoon drinking around the pool and got noisy. We only met one staff, Raj, who spoke English. He was very helpful and booked a car and driver to take us to Trincomalee.
