This is as good as it can get for a nice homely, no frill B&B you could ask for. The place/room is SPACIOUS, & incredibly well-kept, clean, everything seems to be in good condition. Owners could not really speak more than a word or two of English. But they readily tried their best with our questions/ request for help. Breakfast was simple Japanese-styled but impeccably prepared. We really felt at home here...

Kariboshi was the best value for money accommodation during our five-night stay in Kyushu. The room was gorgeous: warm, carpeted in tatami, and the futon mattresses were really comfortable. I also appreciated that they put out two drip coffee packs for us for the next morning. We accidentally slept in and didn't check out till 11am, which I'm sure probably stressed them out but the lovely owners were kind enough to not say anything. They also gifted us a beautiful homemade mug, replete with a goat illustration to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Takachiho is off the tourist trail, but a visit, taking in the Gorge via the Takachiho Olle hiking course and a stay at this establishment, is highly recommended. It's good to keep in mind that there's specific times for showering - I'm not sure what time they open but it's sometime in the early evening, and showering closes at 10:30pm. The hot baths weren't filled when we were there, which we would have appreciated after a long day hiking the 12k Takachiho Olle course, but we understood that it's a quiet time of year for them.

One of the best places I've stayed during my 9 day Japan trip recently. Highly recommended for anyone going to Takachiho, and to experience staying at a minshuku. Our room was very spacious, clean, warm and en suite with wash basin and toilet which had a seat warmer(very comforting in winter) and an automatic flush sensor. Only slight pity was that we had no warm water from the wash basin but not a big issue. Bath area was downstairs our room, separated for women and men, like in typical ryokans.

Overall we received extremely warm hospitality from both the owner and her granddaughter. 
We felt very welcomed and comfortable throughout our stay.  

The owner's granddaughter spoke excellent English and was very helpful in helping us arrange for a taxi to pick us up early the next morning. She even made a cost comparison table between different taxi companies and different routings for us to select the choice most suited for our budget. She also provided clear and detailed instructions on good places to eat around Takachiho which we enjoyed tremendously.

The owner is lovely and very warm as well. She gave us each a souvenir cup with a beautiful design of this year's animal zodiac (the goat). Apparently the owner has these cups made every year for guests and you can see the various lovely designs throughout the years behind their check in counter. Owner also took the trouble to thank us and bid us off goodbye early in the morning (6+ am) before we went off.

This is a family owned ryokan. Our room is very spacious and clean. There is toilet and a washing point in room. For bathing, you will need to go downstairs to the common bathroom which is separated for female and male. The room would have a kettle with hot water and a packet of coffee. It also has a tv in the room. Since it is a roykan, you will sleep in tatami mattress but it is comfortable. The grand daughter who checked us in speaks good English and she is very helpful to provide us the timetable schedule and help us call a taxi to the gorge. 
To reach Kariboshi from the bus terminal, walk on the left side when you are facing the tourist information. Turn to the right after you pass the bus terminal. You can see a big green balloon, that is kariboshi. You won't miss that green balloon.
We walked about 25-30 mins from the gorge back to Kariboshi. Enroute you will pass by the shrine and a supermarket. There will be sign to show you how to go to kariboshi near the supermarket.

Loved this stay. The room was large with an ensuite and washroom. Bathroom is downstairs and my husband and I got to share a bath as there were no other women staying.
The owner rang her grand daughter to give us detailed information in English about where to eat, what to see and bathing information. We managed to understand most things about how the accommadation worked with gestures.

Owner is delightful and caring and the service is great.

We felt welcome and very comfortable and really enjoyed our stay. I recommend this ryokan even if you only speak English.
