Hotel Sogo

I stayed at Hotel Sogo with my 10 year old son and 13 year old daughter for one night.  It was a very friendly hotel.  It has a great location - it's just a short walk down to the beach and there are shops just outside the front door.  The room is Japanese syle with a toilet and shower room, and there is an onsen downstairs.  We were with Japanese friends so we participated in the traditional Japanese breakfast and it was delicious.  I have been to Shirahama once before and it is one of my favorite places.  I would definitely recommend this hotel to friends and would stay there again.

This ryokan was very reasonably priced, and while it was definitely old with visible wear and tear (there were some slightly leaky pipes in the bathroom, uneven floors, and wear and tear on the paint finishes, but nothing that affected our stay or comfort), it had a lovely retro atmosphere that I quite enjoyed; in fact I'm kicking myself for forgetting to take photos of the interior!  The onsen was very comfortable, although it definitely has that eggy hot spring smell, if that bothers you.  The staff were extremely friendly, and very helpful reserving us a taxi and recommending nearby restaurants, etc. It was a bit noisy at night - some sort of repetitive machinery sound - but overall I was very happy with the quality for the price.

Very cheap, great location, friendly staff

Very friendly hotel and a short walk to the beach

Our first stay in a Japanese Ryokan for 2 nights in May 2013.  
Room is Tatami style on the 1st or 2nd floor and onsen bath on the ground floor.  
As it was low peak season, there were not many other guests.  Beach was quiet as well. 
We really enjoyed their Lobster Kaiseki Dinner during our stay in the dining room on the 2nd floor.  
Walking distance to the beach and tourism information centre (to rent bicyles),
Also, nearby there is a supermarket that opens until late at night.
Very fond memories of Shirahama and exploring through bicycle around Shirahama and to all  the 6 foot baths at our own leisure.   Hope to return

Delicious Dinner

We came along with friends to visit this coastal region. I understand everything is more expensive in such touristic places, but this hotel was the most expensive of its class in all Japan for our 10 weeks trip!
Everything was old and of poor quality, bathes were filthy and inhabited by cockroaches, and most of all, the front desk's employee has been extremely rude:
We were departing from there to Osaka on the last day. We had some plans to visit Shirahama beforehand, but first we wanted to book a hotel in Osaka. As we were surfing the web for some ryokan there, the front desk employee "kindly" asked us to leave the hotel (and stop using internet) because we were past the check-out time! After spending 3 days there, in such an overpriced and dirty place, we were politely, asked to leave the hotel because it was "already" 10.30am.
He couldn't speak English (!), so all he would say was "please leave".
I had to beg him to let us use internet for a little longer. He reluctantly agreed, but after making our reservation and when we were ready to leave, we asked (as in every other hotel in Japan) where we could leave our luggage during the day and before departing to the next city. Again, he refused! 
I speak good enough Japanese to explain we had a long day ahead of us, that this place was the first to refuse such service, but all he kept doing was refusing and smiling. He said "all places in Japan are like this", which is obviously wrong.
We then asked to see the manager, which he said he was. He went on with a flurry of Japanese words we couldn't understand - I would think managers in touristic places should be able to speak English. Then he just kept smiling, not even responding to questions.
He finally redirected us to never-to-be-found lockers at the bus terminal. We then proceeded to the beach with ALL our luggage, but the beach lockers were too small.
As a result, we had to walk the whole day with all our luggage with us!
This is the only place in Japan we could experience such bad service. Unpleasant staff member using forced politeness, filth, expensive commodities and a sour aftertaste that left us with only one advice to give to anyone who would consider going to this hotel:
Don't!!!
