Appartamenti del Re is on the top floor of a beautiful and traditional old building in the heart of the old town and a stone's throw from the Duomo. It is spacious, clean and comfortable with a kitchen equipped sufficiently to cook simple meals - best eaten on the roof terrace with its stunning 360° views taking in the Duomo, La Rocca and the sea. Elisabetta, the owner/manager, was very friendly and did all she could to make us feel welcome and ensure we had everything we needed. While the apartment is a real gem, it could be even better for families (as opposed to couples/friends) if the beds were swapped around. The bedroom off the main apartment has a double bed, while the mezzanine (accessed by open/unrailed stairs) has two singles put together. The access to the roof terrace (steep and precarious steps) is also via the mezzanine. It would be much better the other way around where kids could be put to bed in the safety (and darkness!) of the main bedroom, leaving the adults to deal with the stairs and enjoy the apartment while they're asleep. I did mention this to Elisabetta - hope she takes it on board! Worth knowing: it's free to park by the train station. It looks like you should pay but it's fine - you don't have to. We left our car there for 3 days and it was still there, unscathed, when we went to retrieve it. Also, Appartamenti del Re is on the top floor and there is no lift: lots of stairs so not for the dodgy of knee.
