Haus Adlerhorst

The apartments are amazing (I thought they'd been recently renovated) and have everything you could want except for internet. There are places where internet can be found (library, possibly cafe in Santa Valburga), but the hours are sporadic, at least they were in winter. There is a TV on which you can get a couple of English-language channels including Al Jazeera (so we could stay up-to-date with world affairs at night, even if there was no internet). The lake loop trail is within walking distance, and other trails can be reached by longer walks up the walls of the valley - roads/trails heading uphill depart from several places, but mostly from the towns along the valley road. Also the ski slopes are nearby. It would be preferable to have a car for getting here and around due to the remote location, but there is a bus service that runs sorta regularly in both directions between Merano and the head of the Ultimo valley. Oh, and did I mention that the couple who run this place are lovely and invited us in for a chat one of the days? IMPORTANT TIP: if you are without a car then, on arrival in Bolzano (which you will probably pass through), buy a tourist public transport pass for the buses. There is also one available for the Ultimo Valley region that doesn't cover travel between Merano and Bolzano.The single fares on buses are high, so these public transport cards are a good idea.
