Perfect place to stay in Varanasi and be away of the noise. The old couple that manage this place is so cute and helpfull. Cheap, not very clean, but definitely your place if you want to be some days in Varanasi relaxing

Very different from usual guest house , attached to ancient Shiva temple overlooking Ganges . Very basic cheap rooms around a central courtyard , rather communal atmospere amongst guests . I liked it but probably not to everyones taste , the temple starts the day with bells and drumming around 6am , nice family running the rooms , no traffic noise which is unusual for India .

Shiva Ganga Lodge was our favorite place to stay in Varanasi. 

The hosts are a kind, friendly and relaxed older couple who made us some great meals and were very helpful. 

Good:
+ The best thing about this place is its access to a broad terrace with a great view overlooking the riverside ghats. The terrace is flanked by a decrepit mosque, a few temples and what appeared to be a school for Hindu priests. We spent hours just sitting there, people watching from above, or meditating.  
+ It's far from the action of Varanasi but it's hidden in an area with more locals than tourists. It's a relatively quiet place. 
+ The place has a small menu with cheap, tasty food prepared by the host grandma. 
+ Very cheap -- only 300 Rs. per night!
+ Good WiFi, included in the price of the guesthouse
+ The hosts are really friendly and accommodating. 

Not so good:
- There aren't many restaurants, shops and ATMs around so you have to walk a ways to find anything decent
- There's a mosque with a very unpleasant and tone-deaf call to prayer several times a day, but this is often echoed by the guesthouse dog's howling!
- The beds are hard and the room was always attracting a lot of mosquitoes
- The bathrooms and showers aren't the cleanest

I just happened upon this place by chance and stayed for 5 days. Run by a family the rooms are bare minimum and toilets are shared. The atmosphere amongst guests are friendly and communal areas are very good to socialize. Food is also served at good prices and you may need to use your own bedsheets. I highly recommend this to the budget travellers and my experience in 2008 was a very positive one. Great views of the Ganges from the adjoining temple.

Cheap Lodgings in a very basic property.

It was very cheap for me. I booked in September for the stay in September and it costed me around 300 bucks only online.The place is taken care of by an aged couple and they are very helpful. Lots of choice available around for the food purpose
