Chombala Beach House

We stayed here in January and had one basic room in the row of 4 (we were the only ones there). It had a double bed, a fan and a/c and a small bathroom with loo and hand held shower. No loo paper or soap so take everything you might need. The position couldn't have been better - right by a huge empty sandy beach and we didn't see any foreigners. It's safe to swim and a 10 minute walk along the beach takes you to a little port which was a hive of activity mid to late afternoon. Locals were unloading fishing boats onto lorries and the air was full of fish eagles pinching the tiny fish from baskets on the men's heads. We stayed to watch for a couple of hours, fascinated. A young man who spoke very little English looked after the rooms and a sort of manager visited a couple of times to check all was ok and to translate for us. They got food and drink for us from the village - curry for breakfast, lunch and supper but it may have been possible to have something else if you can make yourself understood. Although simple and basic it was fine and just what we wanted, and we were only sorry we were unable to stay longer. A very special find. We got off the train at Mahe and got an auto (tuk tuk) for the 20 minute journey. It's very out of the way so get good instructions as few would be able to find it. But that's part of the charm - away from it all!
