Very friendly, welcoming and clean rooms. Owner was very helpful in accommodating last minute tours. Decent breakfast included with the price. One possible improvement is to hand out front door key so you don’t have to wake anyone up by ringing the doorbell

Woke up with the birds music very relax after 3 flying days was perfect.
Breakfast lovely juices and perfect local coffe great strong and at 6 am. Go relax any time in this magic secret garden at this, colonial heritage building. With from my knowledge is hard and expensive.

The rooms were comfortable, the breakfast was delicious, and the garden courtyard was a peaceful and quiet retreat. A friendly staff helped me enjoy my stay in Cuenca. They were knowledgable about the area and happy to assist with suggestions and directions.

We stayed two nights here, could have stayed longer- so comfortable and quiet with very helpful and friendly staff.

Centrally located in Cuenca’s beautiful historical centre, Casa Macondo is a small family run hotel with friendly and helpful staff.  Most of the rooms face a lovely garden away from the street, so noise will not be a problem. There’s also a cozy lounge by the lobby. Guests tend to be older Europeans and North Americans - some are staying for weeks or even months, a testament to the hotel’s popularity. Breakfast is included, but can get repetitive if you’re staying more than a few days. The only drawback is that you have to ring the bell to get through the front door, and at night (after 10 pm or so), it may take a while before someone opens the door. Highly recommended overall.

Pros:
- QUIET, i did not need earplugs at all yay! (stay in a garden room)
- Beautiful gardens with fresh air (the traffic fumes in Cuenca are awful, but this extends into the middle of the block so air is 1000x better
- Super friendly helpful staff - Franz and the ladies have such nice warm energy they all are perfect for hospitality industry
- Best breakfast I've had 
- Great value
- Comfortable nice warm bed linens
- Easy to walk everywhere
- I ended up staying 6 nights and will return here when I'm coming back through Cuenca

Cons:
- None, just stay here, some people said it was a bit of a walk to other places, just depends on where you want to go, and I spent most of my days walking walking walking, so there is no one perfect location in Cuenca. Very easy to walk anywhere and close to the Plaza Calderon.

When i arrived in Cuenca I stayed at another place for one night that I couldn't wait to leave. I walked around to about 5 hostals the next morning and Macondo was the last and the best. I checked out a few others because I'm nosy that I stumbled across too throughout the days I was there, and I always thought Macondo was best.

PS. I've probably stayed in 1000 guesthouses all over the world in my many years traveling, this is a good one I promise.

Only a few blocks from the main square you can find this treasure: A colonial-style hostel with nice rooms arranged around a little garden and many spots to hang out. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would stay here again.

This is a gorgeous family run place - the breakfast options are perfect - eggs, museli or fruit salad with all the coffee and bread options.  This is easily the quietest place I have stayed in Ecuador!! And still near loads to see and do 😍😍!  Beds super comfy too!! I forgot to mention hoy water 🚿 🙌🙌🙌🙌

We stayed here for 3 nights and stayed in a suite room. The hotel has lots of character (nice indoor and outdoor courtyards) and our room was lovely and light. Other rooms are around an indoor courtyard so might not be as bright and spacious. The shower was good and hot and the WiFi excellent. It was a convenient location for exploring Cuenca and near to plenty restaurants and the various squares. The staff were very friendly and helpful with our onward travel arrangements to Guayaquil. We appreciated the drinking water available in the kitchen. One minor thing is that we found laundry here to be very expensive.

We originally started our stay at another hotel which we were not happy with and was rated 4 stars - Casa Macondo was recommend and we said...okay!

This is B&B and the room was cozy and very clean. You can’t beat the price and they have a nice breakfast.

It is a beautiful old mansion within the central district of Cuenca, so it’s easy to walk to historic sites and many great restaurants.

However what stands out are the people working here - they are fabulous to say the least! Everyone is so nice and accommodating and you feel like your staying at a friends casa.

If your looking for luxury it’s not the place, however, my wife and I having stayed in some very nice hotels, but we just adored Casa Macondo.

We will be back as we plan to bring family from the coastal section of Ecuador who have never been to Cuenca.

Charming Hotel 

This is a wonderful Hostal! Great location, very quiet, lovely outdoor courtyard and indoor seating area. Book exchange in a variety of languages. Staff is Super friendly and always on hand. Easy to arrange local tours as well as tours of the region at very reasonable prices. Family rooms available with kitchenette. Also guests have kitchen access from 2-9 and can use the kitchen facility for their own cooking. This is a great place to stay short term or long term. I will definitely be back!

Quiet Rooms

We stayed three nights in this absolutely delightful hotel, in an old converted mansion. It is lovely and tastefully decorated. The staff are incredibly pleasant and helpful.

Our room was very quiet, overlooking the well tended garden...beautiful.

The beds are comfortable and the shower is FULL of hot water! And they have a same day laundry service.

It is an easy walk to the main square and the many Cuenca churches, museums etc.

We would definitely stay there again.

A Gem in Central Cuenca!

We arrived in Cuenca last Friday and checked in to Hostal Macondo expecting it to be a two nite visit.   But the central location and lovely staff captivated us and we stayed for four nites, just checking out yesterday.  From the street, you may not expect much as the simple sign and locked entrance are no indication of what awaits beyond the front doors.  This is actually an old colonial house with interior gardens and landscaped grounds where peace and tranquility await.  You have no idea that just a few feet from the front door all of Cuenca is hurriedly moving about.  We had an interior room but were offered a room with a window to the outside gardens.  It was hard to choose! The Maconda kitchen serves a delightful breakfast - far better than any hostal we've visited in Ecuador in the past, and it's included in your nitely rate.  We particularly loved Jessica at the front desk, Angie in the kitchen and housekeeping departments and Franz at the front desk.  They were all smiles and more than willing to make our Cuenca stay with them a pleasant, peaceful and welcoming one.  I highly recommend!
