Villa Caburni

You need a car or you will have to walk a lot. It is close to Caburni which is beautiful waterfall. The food at the restaurant wasnt very good but the place is quite. The better restaurant Los Helechos is a long walk but better food. Better to have a car. At the information center for $10 cuc per person including transportation and lunch at the restaurant we booked trips to Guanayara, El Cubano. Wish we had book El Nicho in advance and Cayo Las iguanas. The air is pure and weather very nice.

We were actually booked into the Hotel Los Helechos but when we arrived, they had just closed due to the lack of power and water.  They took us to Villa Caburní, which is part of the same hotel chain, and we were given a villa with 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.  They had a generator, which meant we had light and air con, and they brought us a large bucket of cold water and a bucket of very hot water, plus a jug, so we were able to wash and keep the toilet flushed (essential as our previous hotel had been without power or water).  We had a small breakfast in the morning, but then had to leave as they were also closing due to the conditions.  We were very grateful they had accommodated us, and found the staff pleasant and helpful.  I would consider staying there if I were visiting Topes de Collantes again, although driving round the hairpin bends at dusk and in the rain to get there in the first place was not a pleasant experience.

An unexpected stay

Not bad for the price

Newly refunished family bungalow was not satisfactory due to the small and uncomfortable double-bed (140x190 cm) with un-even legs. Good, clean bathrooms with shower (heated during the day by solar water heater) and A/C in all rooms. The mattresses were uncomfortable and the bed wobbly. The kitchen was without any tools or equipment for cooking or even making teas/coffees. Small mini-bar fridges in bedrooms for cooling self-obtained water or refreshments. No shopping available on premises, except water/drinks. Hotel restaurant was on a pre-made menu of either meat or fish. No vegetarian options.Service was basic, and complaints were taken personally, and nothing was improved during the stay. The safe did not work.

Beautiful and spacious family forest bungalow in the hills

I wasn’t expecting much from this mountain top lodging; after all the website does admit it was built in the 50s. But 60 years of being run down and operated by government folk who have no concept of service, make it a destination only for the bold traveler with extremely low standards. Let’s just say cleanliness and maintenance have yet to be discovered. Our cabin was falling apart and the only things saving Caburni from a 1 Star review were a delightful server called Maria and our realization that there’s simply no budget in Cuba for government operations. We were staying in Toco only for the scenery and hiking. Ask for Yasiel as your tour guide; he’s super knowledgeable, interesting and considerate and turned our experience from negative to enjoyable.

Borderline dire

Not for a long stay, as the place is remote. Access is by very steep roads, difficult for a small car. But as an access point for the National Park the place is fine. Good rooms, reasonable food, not too expensive.
