Only a better writer could make this a better review, so let me simply say in 32 years of visits to Latin American hostels, this was the best one. When it comes to his customers, innkeeperJuan Carlos seems in complete command of the important distinction between full satisfaction and total delight. To stay anywhere else in town is to miss a rare travel opportunity. The front door even gives onto the Plaza Principal, with only a fountain between the inn and the cathedral of a town dictionaries should use to illustrate the words "serenity" and "tranquility". If church bells are a bother, by the way, what are you doing in Colombia in the first place?

You more or less get what you pay for; it's a budget hostel and no one's being fooled,  but it's definitely on the fairer side of pricing.  There's only one bathroom,  complete with suicide shower, and the kitchen is a sort of shack - but there's a stereo for your music,  it's fairly comfortable, some of the staff are very friendly,  and it's a great place to check out the rest of the town.

The Tomate Cafe Hostel offers several types of rooms. We stayed in a private room, which was very clean and spacious. The shower gave warm water. Breakfast was not included, but provided in the restaurant for a small fee. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The hostel also offers a kitchen and a small garden at the back. The location of the hostel was great: directly at the main square of the village of Guatapé, close to restaurants, the lake and activities. The only comment I have is the lack of a window, fresh air and ventilation in our room.

I really enjoyed my stay here, I stayed a whole week. Owner is very nice and everyone else there as well! Location is great and a great value. If you are dependent on the internet though, that didn't work the best (but not sure that it did anywhere in Guatape). Beautiful place to visit in Colombia and this is a great place to stay! I stayed in a private room and the dorm; both were nice, but I liked the sunlight coming into the dorm room better. I also liked the outside kitchen and yard. Enjoy.

Basic hostel central located

a lovely place to stay, right in the center of town

The location is perfect, right on the central place.

The staff is particularly friendly and always smiling.

The price is very cheap, but our room was quite dirty during our stay (hair, dust, etc.). It appears that the place is being renovated so maybe the staff was overloaded with other stuff to do.

The internet worked well and the garden in the backyard is beautiful.

I would recommend it in few months but now might not be the best timing.

Good deal

We stayed at this hostel in the form room and liked the place even though it is a bit run down. The dorm is spacious and the kitchen is well equipped and they have two quite cats. Overall we were quite happy until we figured out that somebody had stolen our cash. We were the only people in the hostels so it must have been the staff or somebody coming from the outside. The dorm has lockers, but they are so old, that even when they are locked, you can get your arm inside. Somebody took our wallets out of there and emptied them. The door to the dorm cannot lock either and the hostel owner said he was sorry, but did nothing about it and we still had to pay for our night :(
