I stayed here one night because the hotel I booked (Remy's Garden) was in fact full, although hostel-world website said all room types were available, and took my deposit accordingly.
Upon finding out Remy's had no room, I was told Shakespeare Garden was my only other option, and the Island was essentially sold out.
Walking into my room, the smell of must was obvious and strong.   They offered to deodorize it, but I have a problem with deep musty odors because they indicate mold.  In fact, the wall-paper was peeling badly at seams all over the room, and there was mold behind some.
The bathroom was rude.  To put it into perspective, water was actually dripping from the bathroom ceiling, there was feces in the toilet, I felt I was in a slum for nearly $100.00 a night.
In short, the place is dilapidated, like many of the buildings on the island.   It may be charming to see such buildings from the outside (this building was obviously at one time beautiful), but living in such a room is another matter. I was told many of the hotels on the island have the same problem.

For such expensive rooms, the standard is abysmal.   I would suggest staying in a clean hotel in Xiamen, and taking the ferry for a long day on the island.
