Ji Hotel (Shanghai People's Square, Nanjing Road)

Walkable from both South Huangpi Road or West Nanjing Road metro stations this hotel is in a residential area so you get the best of both worlds (Chinese services and western outlets which are a short walk away) Staff know minimal English be warned. They will require your phone number at check in plus the full cost of your stay upfront. However, they didn't ask me for a deposit which is unusual for China. Rooms are on low levels and not on the street so it's pretty quiet. Be careful that you don't book a room with no window, if that's a problem for you. I had a window but it was facing a shaft and never gave out much natural light. Wifi throughout; I ask the staff to input the code to my phone, it's the easiest way Broadband access also available in rooms. Beds are quite firm, if you're not used to this get a room with a queen or bigger and lie on the duvet and wrap it around you! I'll be staying there again because of the location and easy access to both Marks & Spencer's, Blue Frog, Pret a Manger and Pizza Express.
