Huxiangyi Youth Inn - Changsha

My husband and I stayed in a double room for one night, room was very nice, basic but clean. Standard bathroom. Nice common area downstairs to sit and have a beer.
Staff didn't speak a ton of English but wasn't a problem. 
It was a little far from the bus and train station, roughly a 15 minute cab ride or so, but that was okay by us.
All in all I'd recommend! 

We stayed there for one night upon our arrival in Changsha in September, then another night in December. 

If you're new to Changsha, and especially if you speak limited Chinese, make sure to copy the full address in Chinese characters or even print a map with the location. If it weren't for a super friendly taxi driver who called her friends and even the hostel to ask for detailed directions, we would never have found it. 

We stayed at a double bed room, it had A/C, pretty fast WiFi connection, TV, was clean and nice, especially after spending hours on planes and at aiports. Beware if you have heavy luggage though, the climb to the upper floors is a nightmare. The staff was fine, although we felt a litle bit ignored, it was our first time in China and we didn't know a thing, our question about where to best catch a cab nearby was met with nothing but a blank stare. 

The nicest part about the hostel is definitely the backyard with a pool table and the friendly cat though:)   

So after our first time there the impression was so-so. Maybe because we were tired and felt lost.

The second time around we came to visit our friend who was staying in the mixed dorms and was pretty satisfied about it. He made friends with some of the Chinese guests and as soon as two other laowai entered the place, everyone currently staying at the hostel came down to the common room to drink, eat and talk. In the end, after a few rounds of going out to buy more beer and snacks, we were too tired and tipsy to go back to our dorm and decided to stay the night. This time around the staff was friendly, quickly helped us with renting a room and let the whole party thing go on until it naturally ended at 3AM.

All in all, it's not amazing, but it's nice and not that expensive. Both times our rooms were nice and clean, no bad smell, A/C was working and doing great with both cooling in September as well as heating in December. Martyr's Park and Hunan Provincial Museam are a 5 minutes walk away, but the hostel is a bit far away from Buxingjie and Jiefangxilu, the club street so not really a great choice if you want to go out to party or shopping.

Nice hostel 

Nice, but don't expect too much

That's about the size of it. Changsha is just another Mao excepted Chinese grey sulphurous city, and this area, this hostel has an uncared for alleyway feel, averagely whateverly maintained facilities; the wcs could be better; seen worse; dorms are actually not bad at all; common areas have no imagination, but allow you various spaces to use as your own; and the staff are fine.Yang & Luke & Charming & Chairstumptail Miao: nice creatures. The alleyways are kinda bland, but shopkeepers are friendly and honest. 136 bus can cart you. A couple of half-decent noodle shops. Let's not diss this entirely.

Shabby city, shabby hostel, pleasant staff

I stayed at this hostel as a last minute measure, having been forced to make an impromptu visit to Changsha. Firstly, the location of the hostel is less than ideal, especially if you are hoping to enjoy some of the nightlife in the centre of the city.

Secondly, I was very disappointed to be told by the staff that there were no lockers to store my belongings. Having travelled in China for almost a month this was the first hostel I encountered which did not offer this most basic of services. Apparently the lockers in the room were only available to those who brought their own padlock. The staff were kind enough to offer me the less-than-practical solution of storing my belongings behind the front desk. This would have resulted in the tedious task of having to ask for my bag every time I wanted to change clothes or retrieve any of my other personal effects at short notice.

As for the room itself, my main gripe was with my fellow travellers not the standard or cleanliness of the sleeping quarters. I entered the room to be confronted by a blast of heat that could only be described as sauna-like. I don't know if it is hotel policy to have the heating turned to full or if this was under the control of the other guests, I suspect the latter. While the bed was about average for Chinese hostels, the temperature (and the musty smell it caused) led to a thoroughly uncomfortable night's sleep. I must add that this was made even more uncomfortable by the gentleman in the opposite bed who was openly displaying his genitalia whilst lying awake in bed. Unfortunately I don't know how to say "can you put your cock away?" in Mandarin.

The toilets and showers are also about average for a Chinese hostel. A sign on the wall indicated that the hostel has a Western toilet but I only encountered squat-toilets (often having not been flushed) in my brief stay.

Having had an overwhelmingly positive experience of hostels in my few weeks of travelling prior to this, I had been looking forward to spending a few days in Changsha. However, after an experience which could be at best be described as underwhelming, at worst unpleasant, I decided to cut short my stay.

My advice: potential guests would be better off finding lodgings near the centre because this place certainly isn't worth travelling the extra distance.

Average hostel with below average guests.

First, we reserved online the hoste but they couldn't find the reservation so we had to pay again. Moreover, the staff we had to deal with didn't speak English. The room was horrible as well as the bathroom... The worst hostel I have been to in China so far!
