Hotel del Campo

I have been coming to Quetzaltenango for business several times on day trips in the past. However, this time around, it got late and the cab driver (who brought me in from Zona 10 in Guatemala City) recommended that we stay at this hotel. I must say that I was pleasanltly surprised. Here are some of the things that I noted there: VERY GUATEMALAN: I stayed at this place for two nights, and did not see a single foreign tourist! Mind you, this is high tourist season in Guatemala. In fact, this hotel is so out of tourists' radar screens that TripAdvisor (which usually has a pretty complete list of hotels), has only just started listing this particular hotel not too long ago. I was told by some clients next day that this hotel is actually a Quetaltenango classic, and most of those staying here are Guatemalans who have trusted its service for decades. PRICE: Price converted to US dollars on March 2010 was $19 for a two bed room that even has an additional mat for a third person to sleep at. Amazing!!!!! RESTAURANT: The restaurant at the hotel is AWESOME!! Just imagine how comforting it was to come to this hotel after long day of work out in the cold highlands and feasting on a nice warm and tasty soup based on a local recipe. Can't beat that. Breakfast is also nice, and the hot chocolate is very genuine LOCATION: This could be a plus for some people, or a minus for others. This hotel is located on the outskirts of Quetzatenango. For me this was a plus because I wanted some peace and quiet after an 11 hour work day. SECURITY: Unfortunately in Guatemala, a hotel without a jolly, big man armed with a high calibre rifle in the entrance is not safe. This hotel has good security, which is something that is of concern to most foreign tourists in Guatemala. ROOMS: The lighting on the hotel room as not particularly plentiful. But in a way, that also helps provide some cozy atmosphere.
