Just have to know the basics of Portuguese then you good to go and we found it very affordable theres nice coffee shops and good shopping malls close by .very clean and tidy everything works and its value for money

I agree with every word of Louisa's excellent review. This is a relatively new hotel (converted from storage rooms for the electrical goods store downstairs) and clearly lacking in "hospitality" experience. Clean sizeable rooms but a very poor breakfast and, to be expected, seriously overpriced. But the staff do try ... despite their lack of appreciation of what most guests might want ... like coffee in the morning and something other than Brazilian novellas on the TV. The service station in front has a shop where you can get Nescafé and biscuits ...

Just one night ...

Oh dear!! The hotel is central Beira, aka ugly chaos. The view from the window is of a petrol station and traffic outside. No secure parking, the chap at the front desk keeps an eye on the car all night long, poor person. 

I am writing this as things unfold. Almost a comedy of errors of Fawlty proportions, although that would have at least been amusing. 

I had booked an executive suite for two nights as a special treat with my partner, happily paying the MT11,000 for the two nights for a bit of luxury but when I arrived (after driving for nearly 8 hours on some of the worst roads I have ever been on - sure there is a lot to recover from after the war, and no doubt the roads were a lot worse earlier, but this sets the scene for my rather fragile state, and I drive rather than my partner as he is a less naggy passenger than I am) we were told "it's occupado" despite having had the booking confirmed. We were meant to just accept that. What the heck??? So I had to cancel my booking, and that said there would be a MT5,500 fee - let me tell you there won't be!! Fortunately there is free wireless so it didn't cost data to get the booking cancelled. 

We were offered another room at nearly half the price. Plain and ordinary, white walls, one very small picture over the bed. Small bathroom, had to ask for more than one towel, and the bed is hard. Weirdly there are plenty of comfortable pillows. A small step on the floor was nearly invisible as the blinds were drawn and I tripped down it and nearly fell over - not nice. 

The two young gentlemen handling the whole situation were doing the best they could, and we're very apologetic, and gifted me a nice pen as a valiant attempt to calm the waters. My partner, who is fluent in Portuguese, heard that the over-booking of the room probably occurred as the owner  was overseas, and had not checked his gmail account for the bookings - mine was made 26 days earlier; how many other people will be in a similar situation? Shocking.

Ok as I sit here digesting the fact that there is a coffee cup but no coffee or kettle (we supplied the former and they brought up the latter after asking for it) the worst thing is not the less than great room, the lack of a drink (no bar service available, but we supplied our own G&T in the end), the thrum from the traffic outside, or the noise of discussions that carry up the stairwell, but the awful loud musak coming from the reception or whatever area it is out there. Oh, and the very small fridge in the room is really loud but the plug to turn it off is inaccessible. 

Oh, and now my partner has turned on the satellite TV to check on the news of the world and it had a message from the service provider, and he could see it said that the main account hadn't been paid, and it had a cartoon message about how to pay the bill. Ha! Free to air TV was available. 

So after all that fiasco we decided to go down to the restaurant to try and get some romance in to the situation. I spent some time getting changed, glammed up, and putting my nice jewelry on and was feeling hopeful and positive. We had already reviewed the menu with 23 items on it and I was really looking forward to the meal. My first two choices weren't available. There wasn't even any fish yet the harbour was only about 500 meters away. In the end the cook came out and said she could do chicken and chips but it would take an hour - probably to defrost chicken pieces from a bulk bag first. In the end I went upstairs and had a shower and my partner went to seek out takeaways. Oh dear. 

So, the shower was great, but the shampoo was poor quality and the tiniest amount I have ever had at a hotel - luckily my partner shaves his head or we may have had difficulties with that!  And when things are already bad little things, such as the toilet seat not fitting and the toilet paper not having perforations, just gets to be irksome.   

Right, so ready for bed and went to open the fancy blind a little to let some light in to the otherwise pitch black room during the night, and the pull cord to open the blind broke. Seriously!!! What next? Hmm, what next is the repeated alarm from a car over the road that goes off for a minute, then on for a minute. Sigh. 

I'm looking forward to the buffet breakfast tomorrow - the front desk guys have promised there will be food available then!!  Oh dear. Breakfast was uninspiring to say the least. Filled up on white toast, butter and jam, and at least they had hot water and milk so I could add our own instant Nescafé classic - close to the best coffee I've seen for a while, and that's pretty sad really, but the Ricoffy chicory and coffee option there is just not OK. 

The place is certainly clean, and it looks fancy and shiny. The front of house staff are lovely. But the business is badly run and neglectful. Certainly not focused on customer service. 

Because the two front of house staff were so lovely and I really want them to be able to keep having meaningful jobs, I feel bad suggesting people try elsewhere in Beira, and I can't promise things would be better there if you did try elsewhere. I guess that if you had business very nearby, didn't have a car, and are in just for the night, it could be an ok place to stop. Make sure you bring earplugs though. 

Needless to say we are now only staying one night and will have an extra night at Gorongosa National Park. 

Overall this place is really disappointing. If it wasn't for the staff and the fact the place is clean (again thanks to staff) I would have given this a 1 star rating. I just hope the business is run well enough to make sure the front of house staff in particular are paid and properly looked after. They did a brilliant job and would be a coup for any business to employ.

Rooms are clean and well. Staff also good. Just one thing if you do breakfast you have to pay.  It’s strange for me. Every residential hotel breakfast is including. Hotel management should increase food facilities.
