often stay here for a few nights,tim and heather are lovely hosts and always helpful, the sunday roast is first rate, and a nice relaxed air about the place

Just called in for lunch on our way to Barnstaple. We had a very enjoyable experience with a lovely welcome from the new owners. It is  situated in a quiet village and it is  a beautiful, quaint country pub.  I Would definitely recommend. Large car park and they do pub stops for motorhomes.

A n ideal place to stay for exploring Devon .  Cottage was ideal, right next door to pub. Plenty of space in car park.  Lovely owners who provide good pub food and  excellent service. We have been before and standards were as good as first time. We will go again I'm sure. Well worth a visit

It was AMAZING! The best food I've ever had in a long time, especially for a Christmas meal. My friends and family enjoyed the meals aswell. Staff was very friendly to everybody on our table. Food came out pretty quickly. Would go here again!!

Now stayed in the cottages on two occasions , lovely hosts and superb food in a beautiful and peaceful setting, and hope to visit again before Christmas also lovely to see the train's passing by on the tarka line , also had a fun evening with the bingo night

A fantastic stay the manager steve ran everything and was an amazing host I had the famous roast dinner he cooked and it was lovely my accommodation was a cottage warm beautiful and comfortable with everything for an amazing stay thank you I'll be back

Steve & Karen were the best hosts that you could ask for, we stayed for dinner 3 nights in a row and tried a different dish each night. The food was incredible and cooked to perfection every night. The pub has a very cozy and inviting atmosphere, the log burner was lovely considering how cold the temperature was outside. The kids enjoyed playing pool and couldn't wait to go back each night. This pub is a hidden gem and an asset to the village. The beer is also worth a mention as it's nicely chilled and very fresh.
I can't recommend this pub enough and I hope to be re visiting soon.

Good honest roast new owners obviously no what there doing came on Friday when there was live music hopefully that will be a regular thing massive beer garden pool table darts not much too fal lt really

Had a weekend here before Covid. the accommodation was clean and tidy and had everything we needed. fantastic outlook over the Tarka Line. easy access and parking. Beer and food were exceptional. The owners asked what time we wanted breakfast as there was no set time which i thought was fantastic. They offered to take us to the nearest train station and pick us up as the train only stops once a day in Portsmouth arms station. all in all a fantastic stay and we will be returning very soon

Amazing food from amazing hosts.

Had a fantastic weekend. they couldnt of been more helpful

We were in the area for a family event and needed dinner. Our cousin, who is a regular, suggested the portsmouth arms. 
We're a slightly rowdy bunch, and were a little worried we wouldn't be welcome as tourists in a local village pub. 
Four of us went along and were given a warm greeting from the landlord. He honestly looked delighted to see us. Service was prompt. Another of our group turned up and was directed to our table without hesitation. The food was delicious and reasonably priced, as were drinks.
I don't get down this way often, but I'd definitely go again!

Warm welcome and great food

Five of us headed to the Portsmouth Arms after a day of travelling for a much needed beer and food.
Walking into the traditional pub we were greeted by the very friendly barman, who made us feel very welcome throughout.
Food and drink were reasonably priced, and the food  (I had a veggie burger) was really tasty and served with a smile. 
what I also loved was the huge array of board games, as well as pool table and dart board. Unfortunately we had to be some where later in the evening, but next time we visit the area we will definitely spend an evening in the bar.
Can't wait to return!

Friendly service and decent pub grub

We visited the Portsmouth Arms a couple of times during our stay in a Forest Park Lodge, once for a drink and later in the week for a meal and drinks.
Highly recommend as Steve and Karen, the landlord and landlady, were most welcoming and friendly.
Also Buster, the lovely little black puppy. We enjoyed our drinks and the food was amazing. We sat in the garden for our drinks and inside for our meal. A lovely atmosphere! Thank you very much, Lynda and Mike Smith.

Great friendly welcoming pub/hotel

We stopped at the Portsmouth Arms on our way to our holiday rental for a drink. We were greeted by the landlords who were super friendly. They made sure we were comfortable and took our drinks order. They continues to make sure we were ok throughout our stay and ensured that my daughter had ice for her drink (he had started the ice machine just before we arrived). The drinks were well poured and the landlord provided some information on a local ale that i had (hanlon yellow hammer). 
The pub is a great place to stop for a drink or meal if you are passing by. Highly recommended.

Cheeky drink in super friendly pub!

Steve the landlord knows what he's doing with the local Hanlons beer and indeed all the beers. A very real pleasure watching him pull the perfect pint, and then me drinking it. Last night we had a meal - excellent food. But also we had a really good time with the other people in the pub, it was great to meet everyone and the raffle added to the enjoyment of the evening. We visited about a week ago in the lovely weather and sat outside watching the occasional train pass by and taking in the views across the fields and river. Idyllic. This is an extremely attractive and welcoming pub  and we look forward to coming back!

Had a meal here....what a great night....so much fun!

Went here with a party of 11 and our dog. The landlord had initially said we would need to sit outside as fully booked but as the weather was so bad once we got there we found he had rearranged things so we could squeeze in inside which was very much appreciated! Good pub food and great welcoming atmosphere.
