It is an excellent property. We, in fact, decided to extend our stay having been so impressed with the cottage. It was clean, comfortable, surprisingly big(the pictures do not do justice). The staff have been very courteous and helpful. The only word of caution is for one to plan their meals well in advance as the area has little to offer in terms of dining. The local co op and Spar are well stocked though (open from 6am until 10pm everyday).

Great and accurate communication with Ester and a great location. Nice and clean with good facilities. Peaceful and clean area and a lovely location to relax and see the quiet surroundings. Great for a little get away.

Amazing location, beautiful property with everything you need for a relaxing stay, plenty of Amazing walks. Ideal for a family getaway.

Stayed in this great hotel several times but unfortunately the hotel will close it's doors for the last time today. It  had mixed reviews but it was full of character - yes the plumbing was old like the house but everything worked and the 7 course taster menu with wine was brilliant quality and value. Really sad it's gone and just want to thank the owners and the staff for such great times and make sure the last review is a good one

This is the third time we have stayed here and done the taster meal. We upgraded our room and it was perfect. We didn’t enjoy the taster menus this time, however. If we had seen the menu beforehand we would not have booked it. We don’t like mackerel, and we would not have wanted pigeon breast. Other than that it was very nice. The staff are very helpful and nice.

Just stayed Saturday 25th May, 2019. Having read some reviews I was not sure what to expect and although a bit of TLC is perhaps needed we thought everything was spot on. The hotel was clean and tidy including the room & the bed was comfortable.
The staff were very friendly with the food and wine being superb, including the breakfast. Would stay again without a doubt.

We spent a night at Lovelady Shields to try out the 7 course tasting menu with wine flight added on, It was a delightful experience, food was exquisite ,very intense and unusual flavours but all absolutely delicious. Wine choice with the courses was perfect.Our waiting staff were well informed of the menu and were very friendly.
Our room was also beautiful , excellent views down to the river and we had a spacious lounge area too. The four poster post was really comfortable . 
There was a huge choice of breakfast options and that too was delicious. We would highly recommend this hotel.

Lovely hotel a bit far out from the main areas of the lakes. Not what I class as a dog friendly hotel. Dogs only allowed in the bedroom

At the beginning of November Seven of us (Including a 2+ month old) stayed for 4 nights in the Clifton Cottage. This was the second time we had stayed here, although it had changed because of the Hotel next to it closing, we found that everything run smoothly. We ere given instructions by email regarding the key and the key safe. The cottage was always warm which was a blessing with the cold days we had. The cottage was clean. If there was a downfall the WiFi wasn't that good and there was only 6 cups, plates etc. I think that you need at the very least 8 of everything if not 10 in my opinion.

Lovely quiet country house hotel with fantastic food

Overnight stay with food taster menus.

Firstly, I have to get one thing out of the way that comes up in other reviews - it is true that the hotel does need TLC, and so it definitely won't appeal to people who want magazine-style perfection. But don't let that get in the way of things, because there is plenty to recommend it. It is still a very comfortable place to stay, in a beautiful setting, and our room was really nice. What made it for us, however, were the lovely, friendly staff for whom nothing was too much, and also the excellent food. We had the seven course tasting menu, which was very good (although we would have preferred an earlier start than 7.30, given the number of courses - but that is just a personal preference for eating earlier). 
The Alston area is an interesting place to explore, excellent for local walking and also not far from Hadrian's Wall and the northern Lakes. We were hampered because we happened to stay during a week when the whole of the UK was experiencing the wettest June for many years, but that means that we will have to go back another time. When we do, we'll be more than happy to stay at the Lovelady again.

What a Treat

Sadly there was a flash flood when we stayed which impacted the toilet being able to flush, the shower not working and electricity. A couple of other fixable problems which I let management know about.  Other than that it was a great place to stay and I'd be happy to go back.
