I traveled to Ecuador to do volunteer work as a solo woman and booked my first week at this hostel to give it a try and be able to change if I found a better deal. I walked through the whole town and asked around for monthly prices, deals and visited all my options but I ended up staying at Arrels for 5 weeks after all. I really loved the neighborhood, though in June with all the rain the streets of the Tigrillo were extremely muddy (if you travel in June and July, bring rain boots or at least sandals that can be rinsed easily). It was peaceful and quiet, with butterflies, birds, beautiful plants and cute little chickens. 

The owner Omar is a very honest, trustworthy and helpful man. I felt safe at all time staying at this hostel especially since I was a solo woman traveler, sometimes guys would bother me to hang out (even though I was here for work, not the party, and kept denying their invitation) and would follow me to my hostel... but the owner wasn't afraid to tell them to buzz off when I was too shy to do it myself ;) I really appreciated that. Other travelers staying there were always very laid back and respectful and I never had a problem with a neighbor. My bed was very comfortable and it was definitely the best quality/price option I've seen in Montanita.

Perfect 5 weeks stay

Omar is a great guy. Super chilled out about everything.  I think the address is wrong on booking.com but it is a really chilled out place.  Head out of town toward the bridge then it is immediately right on tigrillo street. About 500m up on your left. He was so nice and lent is his own body board. He also had a cute cat! 

Basic but friendly. 

We loved our stay here. The owner is super relaxed and friendly which made our stay even better. It's a 5-10minute walk out of town which makes it super peaceful - there's heaps of loud music in town at night. You feel like you're properly in the country which is great. We had a double room with private bathroom, cold shower (it didn't matter it was pretty hot outside) and a fan. There's a nice chill out area with hammocks and a kitchen area too. You can rent boards and umbrellas, as well as get cold drinks if you like. It was a little tricky to find at first, just take the 1st right heading out of town over the bridge and it's about 400m down on the left hand side (look out for the sign). Definitely worth a stay in montanita.

Comfortable, quiet and great value for money

My boyfriend and I stayed 5 nights in the double room with private bathroom and had the best time here. It is close enough to the center (5min walking) and the beach, but far enough to have some quiet time. 
Everything was clean, no hot shower (like in all the coast, and it's hot enough), a very cosy common area with hammocks, a shared kitchen, very good wifi (in the rooms also). 
The mattresses could be more confy. 

The owner Oma ist the nicest and most welcoming guy, he gave us a lot of advice about the area, let us use a bodyboard that he usually rents, he is a great host. He can also serve breakfast (not included), and snacks. 

Really recommand if you want to have the best stay in Montanita without the inconveniences of the all time partying (but still can party if you want).

Nice and cool atmosphere in Montanita

I stayed at Arrels for about a month, had a nice time down there, met some nice people and ate the best food ever. Going back sometime definitely to get some ceviches and yogurt ice cream. Didn't get the chance to surf but next time I'll give it a try with the owner Omar :)
