We chanced upon this hostel while cycling the coast down towards Grenå.  With two tired kids in tow, all a bit tired and hungry, we needed a boost.  The host welcomed us into the dining area with open arms and explained with pride that the lunch was "pay what you think it is worth".  A nice simple buffet lunch of good food and an incredibly warm welcome.   

We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed our lunch and then cycled on.  We probably paid more than we would have paid in a normal cafe, but it was worth it for the warm welcome.

Very serviceminded people, the food is awesome. Simple standard in the rooms, but very clean. Many activities inside and outside for the kids. Short walk to some very nice beaches. Short trip to Djurs Sommarland, which is heaven for family, with animals and roller coasters, biggest amusement park in the Nordics.

Everything is perfect from the food, the service and the place. its my first time to try to have 2 overnights in a danish "vandrehjem" with the whole family and i was very very surprise. Atmosphere is very good, it is perfect for my son who is 3 years old, the rooms and the bed is very comfortable. The food is really really good, and it is a restaurant quality. I would recommend this place so much and would really love to come back again.Overall, ITS THE BEST!

As an older woman interrailing around Europe Danhostel Gjerrild was the best youth hostel I stayed in. I was the only person there in October and Dorthe and Torben were extremely welcoming and hospitable; picking me up at the train station as there was no bus that day, providing a fantastic box of organic vegetables for cooking in the wonderfully equipped kitchen and offering a selection of organic beer and wine. There is a great laundry room too. The bed was really comfortable; I slept in a 4 bedded room with bathroom and small entry for coats and everything was very clean.  There is good internet and the communal areas are welcoming and well laid out with books, games and comfortable sofas.  Bicycle hire is cheap and there are fantastic walks along the beach and through the woods.The hostel has a lovely atmosphere and I felt recharged after my time there.  Highly recommend it. The hosts Dorthe and Torben are extremely nice people. Thank you.

We were not staying here but came for a birthday party and I have to say it was the best meal we had in all our stay in Denmark.  The chef made a little speech explaining all the different items in the buffet (and there were a lot!) and everything was so delicious and interesting we all went back for seconds and then just about managed to eat one of the equally wonderful puddings.  We wished we'd stayed here if all the meals were like that!  The hostel was very roomy and comfortable and lots of space outside for the children to play safely.
