Mileka, the host, unfortunately does not know how to deal well with people when things don’t go her way. She started off very friendly and helpful but quickly turned aggressive and rude as soon as we had a problem with the apartment. The following is our complaint directly to Airbnb: 

Broken sofa bed and an aggressive host.

Prior to our booking in Rovinj on the 19th August 2022 I had checked the bed size with the host Milica. She suggested in advance of the booking that it was 160cm wide but was not sure if it was 140cm wide instead. I asked if there was a sofa bed with sheets we could use incase it was the smaller 140 size - she said yes. 

When we arrived yesterday on the 19th, Milika (the host) told us that the sofa was broken well over a week ago by previous tenants and it could not be used as a bed. She also told us that the actual bed was only 140cm wide and that we should sleep in it and not have a problem. This should have been communicated in advance of our stay.

After she had left, we were sitting on the broken sofa but it was in a really bad way so you could not sit on it comfortably - we contacted her to tell her. We left the apartment and when we came back it had been turned into and made up as a bed. We contacted her again to say it was not stable as a bed and that we needed to sit on it during the day as a sofa. 

She turned up at the apartment soon after and was very aggressive in her attitude towards us. She did not once apologise for us having a broken sofa bed and went on to say it was not her fault and it was "basically tough" and that we had rented the apartment and should "put up with it as there was nothing she could do". She said it would take a long time to organise a new sofa so that was "how it is and we should accept it" and basically put up with it as it was. 

We tried to tell her that we needed a sofa during the day to sit on and this situation was not good enough . She actually laughed at us and said how we could "sit on the broken bed for something to sit on when we needed to". She even sat down on the edge of the unstable bed and said "see, what are you complaining about you can sit down". This was unbelievable. She had no understanding that she was in the wrong and was not displaying any sense of reasonableness nor responsibility for the situation.

It was a long drawn out stressful situation where she kept trying to argue with us. Despite being very frustrated we remained polite and calm. We reminded her that we had paid full price for this apartment yet Milika found it funny that the sofa was important to us and told us that we should "just accept it and not let a sofa ruin our holiday." 

We said we would not accept the situation of the broken sofa bed having paid full price for the accommodation and asked what she would do about it. She eventually told us that we could either have 20% off the booking or cancel in full. She demanded an answer there and then but we said we would need time to think this through as we could not make an instant decision with her there with her attitude pressurising us. It was evening and we also knew there was very little available accommodation in Rovinj since it was a very busy period. She demanded that we "had an hour to decide". We asked her to put this in writing into the airbnb messages. When she did this about 10 minutes later after our conversation she further demanded that we reply in 30 minutes which was only 40 minutes in total and not the hour that she had originally demanded. We did point this out to her by replying to her through the messages.

Had she apologised and been reasonable we may have taken the 20% offer but she was so awful to us that we were so upset and stressed and did not want to stay there another minute. We were also very cross that she knew the sofa was broken and that the bed was only 140cm well over a week before we turned up but decided to not tell us anything. We feel that she really did not care for her guests. 

We decided to leave and take our chances finding something else. 

We note that the apartment was immediately available again on airbnb. It looks like some other unsuspecting guest has booked it and has paid full price for the broken sofa bed. We urge that this apartment should be taken down from airbnb until the sofa has been replaced because the host and the contents of the property fails to meet airbnb's standards.

Sofa was broken and Host had bad aggressive attitude

Spacious and nicely decorated. Noisy when other guests are in residence as it needs better soundproofing. No shower curtain so the bathroom gets wet. Good looks given priority over practicality. Wifi works well. Good location. The entrance smells like sewerage. Couch has some suspicious stains and dog fur. Air con is unreliable.

Disappointing and not as advertised

The apartment was recently modernized (IKEA all the way) with a cute little balcony off the back. No view, but still nice. All the amenities for cooking your own meal and very close to markets. Steps away from the harbor and great restaurants. As someone else mentioned, stairway can be a challenge but staff will help with luggage. All in all, wonderful place to stay

Modern apartment in the middle of old town

The reason we booked this apartment was because of the photos. We were told we were being upgraded when we arrived, only to discover that we had actually been downgraded, possibly due to our booked apartment been given to someone else. Instead of the balcony, spacious apartment and bath as advertised, we found ourselves in a poky apartment (although the bedroom was relatively spacious), with the tiniest shower we've ever had to bathe in. My 6ft 2 husband had to stand in the kitchen which adjoined the bathroom to get himself cleaned.

We tried to avoid the apartment as much as we could to save ourselves from the sewage smell as well as the noisy occupants above us stomping throughout most the night. No attention to detail - an ironing board was provided with no iron, no extra bedding except for a skimpy duvet with no cover and dodgy stains. 

To top it all, the owner couldn't wait to receive the cash for our booked 3 day stay, which was understandable in hindsight - perhaps those before us had cancelled prematurely due to the above. We arrived around 4pm, the owner showing us around the apartment hastily, then asking if we had cash. We said we didn't - she said she'd meet us at 6 and aggressively rang the doorbell at 5.45 waiting for the cash. The only reason we stayed was the location and the 2 small windows offering at least views of the beautiful blue waters below.

NOT AS ADVERTISED

We stayed in the Shambala suite which had beautiful sea views and fully renovated. The location was very central and not too difficult to get to from the parking area (Rovinj is pedestrian only). Rovinj is a very special city and Villa Markiz only added to our experience.

Amazing apartment

Good damn for a fantastic and beautiful apartment. Located only 20 meters from the old harbour. Beautiful view from the apartment over the old roofs to the harbour. Very nicely renovated apparent in the old middle-aged area, only for pedestrians. Very central location, harbour, old town, restaurants, cafes all are only a few steps away. Very nice and international speaking owners, very helpful, family business I love it. Apartment perfect, everything is there, nice clean, free fast WiFi. Easy booking, good prices, fast response on e-mail, text message. Perfect and highly recommended professional owners.
