We only stayed 36 hours but made lifelong memories from Gordona's amazing cooking (apricot jam fresh made donuts) to Denis's funny personality to waking up by the crow of a rooster and the smell of coffee.  Every room is dripping with country charm.  We helped prepare fresh cheese with Lily and git to enjoy it for breakfast.  Do not leave without a few jars of apricot jam and some bars of whey soap.

Our tour group stopped here for an overnight between Sarajevo and Zagreb.  The site is a small family farm in a small (under 1,000 population) village.  There are friendly pets in residence and the hosts are wonderful people- a married couple who love their guests and each other If you ask Denis, the husband, he may show you a video of his rock band that plays classic America rock music!

We were greeted with a shot of slivovitz (plum brandy) and homemade doughnuts with homemade apricot jam.  Everything served here is local, honest and delicious.  

The rooms are converted stables so they're not huge, but they have electricity, wi-fi and showers.   No A/C but we were there in August and really didn't need it.  As I closed my curtains for the evening the resident kitten was on the other side, peering curiously at me.

Many wonderful items are for sale: Hand-stencilled aprons, soap made from whey, preserves, pottery made by Dennis' cousin.  

This is a place to relax, enjoy nature and excellent food and de-compress.  It will not be overrun with tourists!  I'm writing this from the Sheraton Zagreb and already I miss Karanac.

Yes, it's true, this accommodation is strictly for travelers on Grand Circle/Overseas Adventure Travel tours.  I would have loved to stay another several days, though.  Dennis and Goca are the most gracious hosts!  Their farm is so pretty, Goca is an amazingly talented artist, and her lovely touches are everywhere you look.  Dennis has the most fun personality, he was born to be a host!  Goca and her best friend and neighbor Lily taught us how to make cheese, which inspired me to try it at home, it was so good.  The rooms were spotless and comfortable.  I wanted to bring the family dogs home with me.  And we so enjoyed the pottery making class with Dennis' brother.

I actually loved that wifi was only available in the courtyard...we needed to stay off our devices for a few days and I think that's good for us.

I'm still dreaming about the goulash that Goca made in the crockery over an open fire...it was SO tasty, it makes my mouth water just thinking about it.

Karanac is a tiny town, but full of charm.

This whole experience was just amazing.  Thank you to the families for hosting us and making our time with you so special!

I have heard that this farm is only open to groups.  That would be unfortunate as it really is the most unique place to stay.  In the family for 300 years (including the guest rooms), this farm compound is the best of agritourism.  Guests help make farmer's cheese for breakfast, goulash for lunch and homemade fry bread.  The lively and gregarious hosts show the fields, the buildings, and the animals - including a lovable golden retriever.  The compound is like a museum with collections of everything found locally.  The dining room is wooden trestle tables.  The rooms are decorated by the host and fresh and lovely for our spring visit.  (The showers are tiny, so don't drop the soap.)  As part of our stay, the brother of host "Denis the Menace" did a hand's on pottery display and lesson.  The whole place is fun, educational, and interesting.  Be ready to be treated like family.

This was like visiting family since I am half Croatian on my father's side. I loved my time here in September 2018 on my Overseas Adventure Trip. They make everyone feel at home. The accomodations are very comfortable but the interaction with the owner and family and friends was amazing.

This was one of our favorite stays on our trip!  Beautuful people, food, accommodations, etc.  We got to experience life in this shrinking village in so many ways.  We learned how to make cheese, goulash and see the beautiful gardens.  We also experienced the quality if the homemade soaps using what.  Just lovely!

Whether you're a city dweller or a country bumpkin, spending "a day in the life" with the Sklepic family and their neighbors.  Ducks, and geese, chickens are scurrying.  The two family dogs (Frida - a Shepherd mix and Luna - a pregnant Dachshund) are always friendly and looking for a pat on the head or a tummy rub.  

We really got into it, gathering eggs from the coop, picking berries in the patch, pitting apricots and mashing them prior to putting the pot on the fire to create home-made preserves.  Others of us went to work heating fresh milk and separating curds from the whey and mixing in various herbs and spices to create cheeses that would sit overnight in a press before they were ready to eat.

The next day we peeled carrots and potatoes, onions and garlic, and cut up thick chunks of fresh bacon and added them to white beans that had soaked overnight to soften them.  We added parsley and other herbs and spices including white pepper and paprika.  The result was a fantastic stew that we had for lunch with freshly baked bread, our cheeses and jam.

Our suite was wonderful as well.  The building had served as a former post office when the town was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.  It contained a beautiful bedroom with period furniture and oil lamps.  On one side, there were stairs that let to a loft bed.  There was a kitchenette with breakfast table and a bath with shower commode and sink.  The door looked like a door on an outhouse except for the carved window which was a heart rather than as quarter moon.  

The women in the group  were shown how to make soap out of the leftover whey from the cheese making.  Some of us went to a shop and took a pottery lesson.  our creations were quite amateurish but we were proud of our work anyway.  These two days took us back to a time when life was simpler but much more rewarding.  We highly recommend a stay at the Sklepic Rural Homestead.

We spent parts of two days and one night here as part of an Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT) tour.  We absolutely loved everything about this charming farmstead in a rural village outside Slavonia's largest city, Osijek.  Owners Denis and Goje were very warm and welcoming.  Denis is kindly referred to as Denis the Menace because of his outgoing personality.  We learned how to make cheese from a lovely neighbor and enjoyed that cheese at the next day's breakfast.  We all had the opportunity to help with tasks relating to dinner and breakfast like collecting vegetables from their garden, picking apricots from their trees, cleaning them and mixing them over a hot stove fire.  Later we enjoyed those same apricots in a very tasty brandy!  We also enjoyed apricot-filled donuts that were delicious.  Early-rising guests have the special opportunity to help the hosts around the farm by checking on animals, collecting eggs, or preparing homeade donuts.  We were given a tour of the property and enjoyed a delightful home-hosted dinner during our one-night stay. We learned how to make pottery from a local pottery master and all of us had the opportunity to get our hands 'dirty' and make a masterpiece!  Our room was #3 in the Little Yellow House, which had maybe 4-5 rooms.  There were also other country-style rooms in the main housing area and all have a private bath with a shower.  Family dogs Luna (pregnant Dachshund) and Frida wee also friendly an dwelcoming.  Luna gave birth after we departed.  All in all it was a wonderful "A Day in the Life" experience and a chance to get away from the bigger cities and larger crowds and just relax!

One of the first agrotourism spots in Croatia. Offers the original, authentic insight into everyday living, local food and most importantly - people living in the area. Great personalities and great hosts!

We spent a night here with our OAT travel group. Dennis is enthusiastic and Gaco a wonderful cook. With their friends we learned to make fresh cheese and watched the local potter. We ate a home hosted meal at another friend’s house, toured the local winery which had good white and rose wine, and ate at the local restaurant across the street. Beds were good with a bathroom in each. Highly recommend.

Living with a family in Karanac, Croatia

I absolutely loved staying in this charming countryside farm. Even though it was early in the season and we couldn't participate in the normal farm activities, it was still a highlight of my visit to this region. Dennis and Goca, the married couple who own the farmhouse, were so warm and welcoming. The breakfast that Goca prepared was so delicious, and clearly was made with super fresh ingredients from the farm.

The rooms were quaint and comfortable, and so adorable. I loved every minute of my stay.
