This hotel is spotlessly clean and had everything you need to spend some good time in Puntarenas! Included breakfast was delicious and filling, the room had enough space to put our things on. 

But the best thing about it was the friendly and helpful family running it. They did everything to make us feel at home, gave tips about the area and even organised (on very short notice) a day tour with the interesting and nice guide Phillips. The perfect introduction to Costs Rica - pura vida! 

On our way to the ferry we stopped here. Little did we know it was a public holiday (mothersday!) and the hotel actually was closed. They still welcomed us with open arm and made us feel very welcome. The jacuzzi was nice especially with a beer and a small snack! The room was nice with AC. Unfortunately traffic is very heavy 24/7 on the ocean side so bring earplugs! Breakfast was fantastic and included. There is Wifi and a pool also. The owner was very helpful and accomodating. Thank you for letting us stay there on mothersday!

This beautiful, small hotel is located away from the noise and hustle-bustle of the "downtown" area, and to reduce traffic noise ask for a room facing the pools . This is an elegant, small, place to stay. It is more "inn" than hotel. The owners and staff are warm, friendly, and accomodating. The hotel is secure, with limited entry and an overnight security guard.

Breakfast each morning (included in our room rate) was excellent: Costa Rican cafe con leche; fresh fruit including local papaya, watermelon, and pineapple served chilled and cut up;and eggs cooked to order, served with "pinto", the customary Costa Rican rice and beans side dish, and, of course, plantain. Table service, not a buffet, served "con much gusto".On special request they served lunch for us.

There is a beautiful pool area, with much shade for lounging, and sometimes we ate breakfast by the pool. 

Besides the pool, the ocean is a very short walk across the street. The hotel will provide you with beach chairs and beach towels. Take flip-flops, the sand can be hot. And the ocean water is warm and gentle, waves, but no giant crashing surf. And we had the beach to ourselves!

Puntarenas is an excellent central location for day trips by car/passenger ferries to the locations across the Gulf of Nicoya such as Paquera, Isla Chira,or Playa Naranjo. These lead to some beautiful beaches and other attractions that would otherwise require very long drives for the visitor whose flight arrives in San Jose.To the south is famed Manuel Antonio National Park. 

The hotel staff made excellent restaurant recommendations, arranged tour guides and drivers, and helped us in every way possible.

Puntarenas is sometimes described elsewhere in negative terms, and I personally think that is because it is a holiday/vacation spot for Costa Rican families. We got to interact with Costa Ricans (in restaurants, on the ferry, on the beaches) and not just foreign tourists. They were patient with our Spanish and always friendy. The restaurants are excellent. Don't miss "helados" (ice cream) and Costa Rican beer.

Puntarenas is a narrow peninsula and so wherever you are you are near the two main roads that carry traffic into and out of the town. Taxis are cheap and quick. Your hotel or restaurant will phone for a taxi for you, and there are always taxis waiting at any of the ferry terminals.

We had an excellent six day stay at Hotel Praiamar, two retired couples traveling together by hired transportation. Highly recommended!

Nice people in a desolate area

Great place to stay in Puntarenas

Small, comfortable, elegant family run hotel.

We stayed here the night before leaving on a cruise out of Puentarenas.  We were disappointed to find the hotel was a 10 minute taxi from the town, as we like to walk everywhere we can.  The room was next to the main road, so very noisy.  The bed was very basic and not very comfortable, as were the pillows.  Thankfully the rooms are air-conditioned.

The beach was across the street, but the water wasn't inviting.  It was good to walk, though. Mother town is nothing special, so we wouldn't stay here if we ever cruise from this destination in the future.

The owner, a Brazilian, was very nice.  She made us welcome caipirinhas that were superb.  Internet was spotty at best.

Noisy, Way Outside the Town

Driving in Costa Rica Is not advised - poor visibility, treacherous roads with pedestrians walking on the shoulder all invite potential disaster. However, when you arrive at a hotel after 12 hours of travel at 10pm  to be informed by the caretaker that the hotel is CLOSED your reservation a joke and the next 5 hotels on this spit of land are fully booked as a mother with her daughter you become two very disillusioned, weary travelers who seriously consider sleeping in the car the only option. Talk about inconvenience!
