I stayed here in July 2016 and loved it so much that I came back to stay in June 2017. This time, the yoga hut is complete and amazing! Jay is a wonderful host, professional and responsive. The houses have everything you need to feel happy, relaxed, comfortable and at home here in Costa Rica. 
Maria (Luz?) is the property caretaker, and she works so hard and does an excellent job! Daily housecleaning, and for additional cost ella cocina gourmet meals to order y ella incluso lave su ropa! The yoga hut is available for yoga classes/retreat, and Jay can hire a masseuse to come to the house. I also LOVE the two new lookouts that were constructed año pasado. The indoor and outdoor wood furniture is comfortable and gorgeous. 
Playa Palo Seco is a fabulous beach! Plenty of shells, sand dollars, crabs, pebbles, mellow waves (great for swimming and body boarding)...the water is a perfect temperature; neither warm nor cold, but warmer than my "home ocean" (Malibu Beach in California). I love how the beach is nearly deserted, not a tourist trap. I feel comfortable walking alone here, day and night.

We had a total of 21 people stay in all three houses -we stayed in the orange house, my sister stayed in the white house and my cousins stayed in the pink house.

Orange House: I read a review about someone complaining about water stains on the faucets and stains on the window treatments; the stains on the faucets are hard water stains from the volcanic rock. Which would be very difficult to get rid of since volcanic rock is quite abundant in Costa Rica! Also, the stains on the window treatments didn't bother me as we are out in the country and in a 3rd world country! How picky can you be??? Besides, these three houses are the personal vacation homes of the owner and his family. I believe these are pretty nice digs -the only con I have is that I would love to see light-blocking curtains in the bedrooms instead of the linen ones. All the furniture in the houses is teak and from the owner's own teak farm -pretty cool! Nice air-conditioning, clean rooms, outdoor shower, over-sized beach/pool towels, slow Internet, kitchen, comfy beds, extra air mattress, flat screen tv, DVD player, game table, caretaker's house in backyard, boogie boards, books, and surf board.

White House: same layout as all houses, three bedrooms (master w/ own bathroom), outdoor shower, the middle house, has a pool in backyard, air-conditioning, fast Internet because the router is in this house, books, flat screen tv, game table, kitchen, boogie boards, over-sized pool/beach towels, and DVD player. This is the nicest of the three because it is the owner's personal vacation home.

Pink House: exact same as the orange house.

The caretakers will clean the house and do your laundry for an additional/separate fee. Which was pretty nominal and worth it since we stayed for almost two weeks! Each house has their own shade shack on the beach, which is a nice treat! The beach is across the road and almost private because hardly anyone is on the beach! I would definitely stay here again as it is secluded, clean, and great amenities!

p.s. on another note, the owner's son was building an outdoor yoga retreat facility, which would be pretty cool if I did yoga!

I enjoyed staying at Tres Amigos a lot. It was so relaxing. The empty beaches, the amazing food, the sweet owners and the opportunities to do excursions (e.g. to Manuel Antonio National Park, Canopy, the Rainmaker....) made it very special. 

What a fabulous time for 7 days with 6 of us,Feb 2018.!  We did not know what to expect. We stayed in the Pink House.  It was clean, nice inside ( like 3 star), plenty of fresh drinking water provided, beds were fine (3 star), could use more pillows, good coffee provided , we drink alot of coffee so I did bring a bag of my own. There are 3 bedrooms ( 2 w/queen and 1 w/twin beds).  Great beach towels.  The beach was terrific..best ever!! No shells, no garbage, no seaweed, just pristine beach with practically no one on it but us.  It is somewhat secluded so you need a car to enjoy the rainforest, the Rainmaker hike( a must!) Ziplining was good though rides are pretty short ( drive to Quespos/45 min and then 60 min bus ride from there).  Maria Luce is the full time caretaker and chef...can she cook!!  Food was terrific! We ate all meals there but 2.  The Monkey Tour right out the back door was so fun ( must have high tide to do).  The monkeys were adorable, shy, but did come eat a banana off the tree branch.  Maria made sure our driver was there for trip from airport and back ( we only had one vehicle).  It is secluded so if you are looking for a resort experience, it is not the place for you. The beach is so wonderful, family did boogie boards, body surf and swim.  you could walk so far out and just sand...no sudden drop offs close to shore.  Also, they are on a well so we spaced our showers out to make sure all had hot water.  Though the outdoor cool shower felt great since it was so warm outside.  Best part...no mosquitoes the entire time we were there.  Few bites from "no see ums"...and an ant or two, but that was it. You need to bring snacks, drinks, etc from town as nothing is close enough to walk to for supplies.   Could there be a few new things in the house, yes, but most of the appliances were new and clean! Maria does not speak alot of English, but we were able to communicate and get most anything we needed.  We did tip her more than the 10% required.  She is worth it!!

Fabulous Stay in All Three Houses!

Vacation off the tourist track

I was really surprised by all of the 5 star reviews. We recently traveled to Tres Amigos and were very disappointed. First, before we got there, we were asked to pay in full via PayPal which I assumed was fine. However, a few weeks before our trip, I injured my knee and was considering cancelling the trip. Despite the fact that I gave more than 2 1/2 week’s notice, I was told that my money could not be refunded, and they would keep the entire amount. The property is US owned, so this was really surprising to me. There is no cancellation policy, so they just made up the rules and told me that they had turned other guests away (which I find hard to believe because the third villa was vacant during out entire stay). I would have been willing to pay a cancellation fee, but keeping over $1000 is outrageous. So, we sucked it up and decided to travel. 

While the location is great, the villas are in serious need up an upgrade. Moreover, most of the issues are cosmetic and would probably come at a low cost. Overall the place seemed very dirty. Thank goodness I had brought Clorox wipes, because I had to clean fresh urine off of the toilet seat!! All of the sink faucets were corroded (and/or may have been covered in toothpaste spit). The dishes and silverware in the kitchen needed to be re-cleaned. The dish drying rack was also filthy and looked older than me. Even the trash can needed a cleaning, it had sticky stains all over the top. The curtains in the bedrooms used to be white, but were covered in gross stains. There were only sheets on the beds, no blankets. Also, when our sheets were changed one day, there was some sort of animal feces left on my bed. Several light bulbs were not working. The floor is orange tile, and the orange stain came off on our feet when walking around barefoot. The shower heads are electric (which is common in Costa Rica), but each broke while we were there (and were replaced); however, my friend was electrocuted when she touched hers! While the pool outside was very nice, the pool chairs had old molded pads, the light wasn’t working at night, and the waterfall was off most of the time. 

The onsite property managers, which were a family, were very nice but didn’t speak a lot of English… so we didn’t communicate with them too much (even though I speak some Spanish). I saw that other reviewers noted that they helped arrange tours and massages, which I found difficult to believe. Also, there is no onsite “chef.” The family cooks you meals, which are good… but, I wouldn’t call it a chef service. They also had a dog that barked a lot and spent most of the day tied up outside, which was a little sad.

The location on the beach is pretty, but the waves are very high all of the time, and it is really not a swimming beach. The sand is sort of mucky and you sink in, and there are signs all over the beach stating that there’s a strong rip tide and you should not swim.

After our trip, I tried to get in touch with the owner about these issues, but received no response. While the location is great, my assessment is that this is place has greedy management that just wants your money. The price that is charged is not equal to the quality, especially with so many other places down the road in Manuel Antonio at a similar cost, with much better quality and service. I’ve traveled all over the world, and this was my third time in Costa Rica, and find no good excuse for this. We felt that the website pictures are doctored, and that we were ripped off.
