Very good
549 reviewsDecent beachside 3 star hotel on the Pacific Ocean. The rooms come with 2 twin beds and a small balcony, which I really liked. Our room did overlook the Pacific Ocean but there was line of dense trees preventing a clear view. The ocean is much rougher here with many undercurrents, and the waves quite high, so there are plenty of warnings to not go beyond waist level. The beach is also black, probably from lava deposited thousands of years ago. Saw plenty of surfers as the waves are just right for them. Pet friendly place and I saw several small dogs. There's a beautiful view of the ocean from the restaurant which in my mind is a winner. It's a long verandah kind of seating with a garden and I sat there for hours watching the ocean. Also experienced a Costa Rican no holds barred thunder-lightning-and rain show while having dinner there. Reminded me of the Mumbai Monsoons. And the hotel has several large iguanas who like to sun themselves. But they are no bother and move out of the way when guests come their way and resume position immediately after. The town of Jaco is a 10-15 min drive. I wouldn't recommend going there as there is nothing spectacular there to do, see or eat. All other activities are a drive away, anything from 30 to 90 min. A few minor complaints - the rooms could do with plug points in convenient locations, especially near the bed! I don't understand this rationing of plug points in this day and age. There was one set on the wall, close to the floor and we had no choice but to use those! There were none next to the bedside table between the two beds and that was most annoying as most people like to charge their phones next to them, while they sleep. Curiously there was another set on the wall (also close to the ground) next to the 2nd bed that was pushed against it. This was impossible to get to unless one moved the bed and I lacked the strength to do so. I tried slipping my hand through the gap between the bed and wall and slide the charger in, but that wasn't enough space because my charger was about 4 inches wide. Maybe a smaller charger would have worked but I am on vacation and carrying only one charger, my most practical one. There was a 3rd set of plug points but the TV and mini refrigerator were plugged to that. And a 4th set near the bathroom sink, but the sink had no counter and I'd have to leave my devices in the sink! So we had no other option but to charge our devices on the only one usable set and keep our devices on the floor. A bit hard to bend if you are not spry and young anymore. See pics. My second complaint is about no coffee arrangements in the rooms. Breakfast on weekdays is relatively late - from 8am onwards and we had to leave at 6.30am for the activities we had signed up for. But the hotel kindly lent me a coffee machine. And for this a special shout out to Kerry Mckinstry from the front office who eased my life by lending me a coffee machine while the restaurant gave me ground coffee, milk, filters and sugar. Life was sorted. I find it hard to leave for anywhere without a cup of coffee in the morning - thank you so very much Kerry. You were a life saver. We spent 3 nights here and most of it on the aforementioned verandah-restaurant.
