I came once in this hotel was back in 2008. God there is a very big difference, they renovated the rooms, the restaurant, the reception. It is such a beautiful hotel, and their staff are very friendly and helpful. I loved it over there and I would definitely go back if I could. The prices are really considerable comparing to other hotels, whereby the quality is not as good as Karthala while they are expensive. This is a "coup de coeur" as they say in French, fell in love with it. You must go. It's a bit far from the city so if you need to be in town, this could be a bummer but if you want to spend a calm relaxing holiday, this is defenitely it. 

Amazing, renovated, différent from my last visit

I went to Karthala hotel 2 weeks ago.  I spent a nice time.  Overall the service is OK.  I have stayed in Comoros 6 months and i am well placed to write this review.  Note that Comoros is a poor country and we don't have much facilities as we expect as compared to other countries.  

The breakfast was delayed even through i reached the hotel by 10.00 am.  The food is not so tasty.  The room was OK.  I paid like 50 Euros for 1 day.  Its recommended to have Euro as foreign currency or Comorian Frank.  

I will rate this hotel average because of the country status.  I have been to several hotels there.  So if you want a cheap hotel to stay,  this is the place.  I will also recommend to have a transport.  

The only advantage is that the place is calm.  I read the other reviews.  I also confirm that the swimming pool was empty.  As I said before,  they dont have potable water for drinking so dont expect this hotel to provide water for swimming pool.

My Day at Karthala Hotel

I had a one night stop in the Comoros. I would have loved to stay in famous French mercenary Bob Denard's Galawa Hotel, but it's been erased and not yet rebuilt. I would have preferred the Ithsandra Hotel, the only acceptable name on the island, but it was fully booked (French army). So I ended up in the Karthala. It was built with love to detail, ca. 40 years ago, originally as a student dormitory, then as a hotel, but the decline has been terrible, especially after a former management desaster. Pool is empty, facades crumbling, rooms mouldy, gardens unkept, restaurant an adventure, credit card payment not possible. But the worst: the distance from the airport is the double from the Ithsandra, and the driving style on the island is completeley brainless. The only positive aspect: the Karthala Hotel's manager on duty was very friendly and helpful.

Sad decline

I checked out this hotel as it looks lovely on the website but I booked another option for my stay in Comoros. How lucky I was! When we arrived, we were greeted by the most pathetic stone dolphin and pineapple I have ever seen on the parking lot. The pool was empty (i.e. no water), the buildings completely run down and the 2 staff in the restaurant were sleeping on a chair. Electricity wires were dangling dangerously over our heads and we saw the ocean from afar (so not a beach-side hotel as indicated on their website). All rooms face the ugly reception area and the terraces are so small you basically share it with your neighbors. I have traveled all over the world and honestly, this is the saddest hotel I have ever witnessed

Don't go there

when i saw the pictures and the ocation a was really interested in visiting this hotel. and a was not wroong. such a gret hotel. the staff is so friendly and caring. the rooms are clean and very well equiped. there is such a great weather, its cool. the restaurant is really good. they have a very talented cook. the food is amazing. 
over all a had a great time in this hotel.
