Songshan Hotel

Very popular with mid-level Chinese bureaucrats who are made to feel right at home here. Banquet service is excellent with a style reminiscent of what would have been five star luxury fifteen years ago. The hotel itself is a three level complex spread over several buildings and is reminiscent of a standard American motel. Rooms are comfortable but could use some upgrading. Staff speak almost no English and rely upon their mobile phones for translation. There are far better options in today's Zhengzhou for Western people arranging their own accommodation but for the price and familiarity of the hotel to Chinese hosts who would be lodging you here, you'll be just fine. The four star rating of very good, assigned in this review, is intended to indicate that the hotel is better than average as average is seen in a slightly negative light. Three and a half stars using this rating scale would be closer but do keep in mind that the atmosphere here is what you would expect to find at a two star Western hotel. Two star hotels can get four and five star ratings so the rating I've assigned as very good is based on my overall experience and not simply the class of the hotel. You'll be treated with a smile and graciously served as a foreign friend which will make your stay welcoming even though you'll really be stepping back in time.
