Zijin Hotel - Xiamen

I chose this hotel because it was cheap and very close to the airport. I had an incoming flight in the evening and a flight out the next morning. The hotel is about 9 minutes walk from the airport terminal. The location on the google maps was correct ( not always the case in China ! ), but I walked passed it because it had no sign and the building looked unoccupied. Also, street numbers are not sequential, in China. After about 1/2 an hour of looking, I found it. I've noticed that the people in Xiamen and also Fuzhou are the kind of jerks who pretend to have no understanding of proper Chinese at all. I wasn't sure if I had a reservation, before the first reservation I made on wotif.com was cancelled by the hotel, allegedly sold out. I got an email suggesting I try again. I made a second reservation, which was not cancelled. Wotif requires a visa or mastercard , which may have been a factor in the hotel cancelling the booking, even though I intended to pay in cash, as I usually do for hotels like this. Nevertheless, I was not sure if the reservation was good so I noted the location of a couple of other hotels nearby. The hotel was quiet and apparently almost empty. I had no trouble checking in, although the two staff at the front desk didn't know any English, so people with no Chinese might struggle a bit. I paid 600 RMB for a 380 RMB room, and they refunded 220 RMB in the morning. This is normal for 3 star hotels in China. The room was clean and neat and in good condition. Everything worked. I liked the bright LED reading lights, reading is often a struggle in hotels. The room was on the side of the airport facing away from the runways and I was unbothered by aircraft noise. I did not investigate any other facilities which the hotel may or may not have, I was not there long enough, so I can't comment on that at all. This seemed typical of a lot of hotels I have seen in China, built in the early 1990's as a fairly upmarket hotel ( the row of clocks with time in world capitals, usually not working, and the souvenir store in the lobby, for example ), and gone a bit downhill since then. As long as the plumbing, TV and aircon are all working, this does not matter, certainly could not argue with the price for a brief stay. And VERY handy to the airport, if you don't mind walking about 600 metres.
