Although from my experience the quality of the hotels in Asia is very good, I will highlight the location.It is very close to the bay where the 2008 Olympics memorial monuments are located; in the middle of the financial zone, and relatively close to the old area and points of interest.I also want to highlight the business area.If I return to Quingdao, I will return to the same hotel.

I loved it here! After seeing bizarre, colourful photos of the rooms in this hotel we took a chance on booking this instead of a more familiar 'brand' hotel and were so glad we did.  This place has character galore.  Every corner, every wall, every ceiling, every detail has been thought about.  It is well-maintained and the ayis were very conscientious, keeping the rooms very clean and tidy (which is not always the case in Chinese hotels).  I suspect that not many westerners stay here as the younger ayi we met was so excited that she asked if she could have a photo with our family (all through sign language of course).  
Breakfast was mostly Chinese food but was adequate - we have loved in China for some time so are used to different foods.  For some the breakfast might not be to their taste.  Plenty of local options for meals plus great walks along the seafront.  The sculpture park was close by. We caught the bus into town using apple maps as our guide, all very simple.  The only thing that could be improved would be the water pressure in the shower, although even that wasn't dire.  I loved the quirkiness of the rooms and the lobby had interesting things to look at at every turn.  A real treasure.

Quirky and Memorable

We booked two sea side rooms, both were very large, quirky and had a great sea view. This hotel is clean and the beds are comfortable. This is a Chinese hotel so there is very limited English and the Western breakfasts consists of some chips and toast, however there is a substantial spread of Chinese food. (Be aware that if it is busy, it is like a flock of seagulls when a fresh dish is brought out.) There are English TV channels and paid movies available. The location is out of the central city area, but easily accessible by a short bus ride. Although you are on the seaside there is no swimming beaches nearby. I recommend this hotel for those who like something a little different.

Quirky Hotel

There's one thing that defines this hotel - the decor. As others have said, it has to be seen to be believed.

The photos make the decor look very tacky and something you would find at a $20 motel. Don't be mistaken, it is all done about as tastefully, and dare I say it, as ingeniously, as can be. A ton of money has clearly been invested. The foyer epitomizes things about as well as can be- there's tables and other seating situated on top of an open aired aquarium (complete with fish and turtles). Most of the walls of the lobby also double as aquariums.

All of this has clearly been done to compliment it's location next to Qingdao ocean world. This location is the hotel's only weakness - it's about an 8 minute taxi ride from the city center (or 45 min walk). It's not horribly desolate but it's definitely not in downtown Qingdao. However, with that being said, it is in a beautiful part of the city, right on the water and along the seawall.

This is very much a strong 4-star hotel (the lack of English staff only slightly taint this rating, but they try hard). The rooms are complete with HBO and other excellent amenities. If you're looking for a strictly international hotel 4 or 5 star hotel, Huake probably isn't for you. If you're looking for something a little different, wrapped in a 4-star hotel, definitely give this hotel a try.  You will definitely always remember this hotel and your camera's memory card will be strained from all the photos you're bound to take of the hotel.

Worth trying

A very original hotel right by the sea. The facilities are very successful and the sea view is very beautiful. A very nice accommodation, especially for children. Unfortunately, however, the simple things like the cleanliness of the windows or the decalcification of the showerhead were forgotten. The hotel is also about 20-30 minutes away by taxi from the center and people speak only broken English. Knowledge of Chinese is advantageous. The Chinese breakfast buffet is very generous. Oropax don't forget, because the walls are relatively thin.

Original hotel right by the sea

Wierd decor has to be seen to be believed.
Despite the strange decor the room was very comfortable, spacious and clean, staff very  helpful and nothing was too much trouble. 
I got the feeling the hotel did not see many european guests and was more geared to asian travellers.
Breakfast was a little disapointing as I am not a big fan of Chinese breakfast items  and no european food was available although any style of eggs were offered.
I'm a regular visitor to Qingdao and this hotel made a welcome change from the big international chains.
Situated right on the sea next door to Polar Ocean World, good selection of restaurants and bars nearby but quite a distance from Qingdao city centre.
A good value and very comfortable choice if you want a seaside location
