Nanjing Grand Yulanting Hotel

This hotel was good for the price, the room was a good size, comfortable and clean. The bed was pretty comfy and they provided me with a memory foam pillow. The location was good, close to a metro station. We didn't try the breakfast, it was an extra 25 RMB. The staff when we checked in weren't very friendly or helpful, but they were ok. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for somewhere cheap, not fancy, but nice!

Average hotel in Nanjing

This hotel is very difficult to locate as it is set back from the street with a side entrance, although fairly close to the station. From the map it is difficult to work out what side of the road it is on and in which direction. I booked a business room, but it is the smallest business room I have ever had in China, with no fridge or English TV channels!  The bed almost filled the room. The bathroom was smaller than what you'd see in Tokyo and had no bath: the door hit the shower as you opened it.  Unfortunately, the bathroom had a terrible putrid smell coming from the air vent (which I first thought was the toilet, so went and bought toilet cleaner).  My Chinese friend confirmed this the next day, so they moved me to another room the next night.  This bathroom had a smoky smell (as did the hard board towels in both rooms: I do wonder if they use more than water to clean in this hotel). In this room, I could not plug in my 3 prong Apple charger, so maintenance helped to force it into the wall, which didn't work either and almost damaged the charger itself. Luckily, I found that my camera battery with two prongs could charge my phone. After this the toilet ran water and leaked on the floor. It was a never ending series of problems being there and had I not paid in advance, would have checked out on the first night.  Breakfast here is not free and no tea or coffee served there either. Staff, however, were friendly and tried to be helpful.

Not so Grand Yulanting Hotel

I recently stayed at this hotel as a part of a group of American teachers who were in Nanjing teaching. We were there for two weeks at the hotel. First, the hotel is hard to locate because it doesn't sit on the main drag of road. Thus, unless you speak Mandarin, good luck helping your taxi driver find the hotel. That being said, there is a Metro station about 1/4 mile away from the hotel. Cleanliness was not good at all and most rooms smell of smoke. The entire time we stayed there, my room carpet was never vacuumed nor were my sheets changed. The only housekeeping they did each day was to empty the trash and replace the towels. The breakfast has few options and is completely Chinese. Most hotels have both Chinese and Western options. Here's the worst part, our guide, along with all of us teachers who were there, think that there is mold under the carpet or in the vents. 5 of our group got severe cases of Bronchitis and 2 of us (including me) got pneumonia while staying there. I have NEVER had pneumonia in my life! We all had to be hospitalized. Once we left the hotel and stayed at a different one, we all felt immediate relief. I will NEVER stay here again.
