This hotel is for the Chinese market and is looking a little tired. It is clean, well maintained and good value with great connectivity to the transport hubs of Nanjing. Close by is a part of Nanjing that has yet to be modernised and has a wonderful atmosphere

We stayed at this hotel overnight en route to another destination. Our reason for selecting this hotel was its proximity to the train station. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised to find that the hotel was an easy ten minute walk. The area is dotted with annoying spruikers and beggars if you arrive late at night so a little care is needed.

The entrance to the hotel is via the second floor of a department store. This is odd, but fine, if you arrive during the day. If you arrive at night, you must go to the side tradesmen’s door and carry your bags up two flights of steps.

The reception staff are efficient, competent and knowledgeable. They were especially helpful with travel information. The gave us accurate bus directions for the Massacre Museum and Tangshan without once suggesting that we should use a taxi. This was much appreciated.

Upon check-in, it was politely but firmly suggested that our room was noisy and we should pay 20rmb more for a quieter room. We politely and firmly suggested that people who book over the Internet are in a position to report such discrimination. Magically, we were given a higher room on the 19th floor. This meant that the train and highway noise was muffled rather than a deafening cacophony.

The room was spotless with Chinese satellite television and all equipment in excellent working order. Our bathroom had been renovated with German fittings.

Breakfast was not included in our tariff but all the western and Chinese food chains are nearby. The breakfast buffet appeared to be more than adequate with some attempts to cater for western tastes.

Xuanwu Lake, one of Nanjing’s biggest tourist attractions is directly opposite. In addition, buses to all other major attractions are within a ten minute walk. The train station, long distance bus station and buses to outer suburbs are also nearby.

Overall, this hotel provides convenience, competent service, cleanliness and comfort. It has certainly lost some of its gloss (the table tennis and games room has long been abandoned) but its location and moderate tariff make it good value for business and sightseeing.
