Lijiang 49 Sakura Hotel

One of my best experience ever. This hotel is a gem in China I highly recommend it. When you arrive the staff is around a tea table and ask you to join them for pure tea. Despite the staff did not speak English we were able to communicate via translation app. All the staffs show such à kindness but I would like to mention ZhenZhen that took time to show the city, took me for dinner, organized tours in the area. It was my great experience in China. Thanks to this hotel and ZhenZhen I really enjoy the area and the old city.

My husband and I stayed at Tinghuatang Garden Inn for three nights during our visit to Lijiang.  We originally planned to stay at the Hilton, but opted to stay at this inn in the Ancient City to experience more local vibes and flavor.   Overall, our stay at the Tinghuatang Garden Inn was pleasant, although with some caveats (see below).  

Here’s what I like about this hotel… 

Convenient location in beautiful garden setting. The inn is conveniently located on a quiet street in Lijiang Ancient City.  It is within easy walking distance to the Mu Palace (aka Mu Family Mansion—definitely visit this attraction and the adjacent Lion Hill/Wangu Tower).   However, note that Lijiang Gucheng is a car-free zone so you will need to walk about 500 meters on cobblestones from the taxi drop-off point to the hotel.  It is best to arrange ahead of time with the hotel so a porter with a cart can transport your luggage. The hotel is also near the highly-rated pair of V Sherry restaurants  (delicious fish and the best tofu I have eaten in China) both on Xingwen Alley (about 350 meters and 500 meters from the hotel). 

Comfortable, clean room. We booked the “romantic room” with a round bed.  The pictures on the website accurately depict this compact room.  My husband called it “the pocket-sized honeymoon suite”.  The room is very clean and the bed is really comfortable.  I have stayed in non-smoking hotel rooms in China that reeked strongly of cigarette smoke.  In this hotel the room had no odor of cigarette smoke. And there were lots of electrical outlets for all your electronic devices. Additionally our room had a lovely outdoor garden space with a nice seating area, and my husband was able to spend a productive day working on this balcony.  Our room was on the upper floor and had good natural lighting, but some of the rooms on the ground level facing the inner courtyard were quite dark.

Helpful Staff.  Upon check-in we had a very helpful staff person making sure that we were comfortably situated in the room.  He helped us with the wifi connection (difficult if you do not have a Chinese phone number), served us cups of tea, and walked us to a restaurant for lunch (when you first arrive at Lijiang, it appears to be a labyrinth, and it is easy to get confused. However, with a smart phone and maps posted on every street corner, one soon becomes oriented). This person also help us arrange our travel to Leaping Tiger Gorge—the highlight of our trip--and an airport transfer.  Another helpful staff was the nice cook who every morning prepared a tasty breakfast of steamed buns, egg and rice noodles with condiments. 

Caveats:

1.	Chinese speakers only. If you do not speak Chinese, the staff cannot communicate with you.  Luckily, I spoke limited Chinese.
2.	No nonsmoking common area.  The common area of the hotel (garden, reception area, breakfast area) is also the smoking area for staff and guests.  If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke, you are out of luck.  It seems safer to stay in the bigger international hotels (i.e., Hilton, Intercontinental) as smoking is not allowed in the common areas.
3.	Variable level of customer service.  This hotel seems to be owned and operated by a group of people who congregated in the reception area.  Depending with whom I interacted, the level of customer service varied from excellent (the young man who helped us at check-in) to poor.  At check-out, a young woman sitting behind the reception desk was smoking and working on her personal laptop.  When I returned the room key to her, she did not even look me in the eyes  or say a word.  Of course, it would be difficult to fire a co-owner for bad service.  

All in all, we had a good visit in Lijiang but I give this hotel 4 stars rather than 5 stars due to the caveats mentioned above.  Understandably, most Chinese-speaking smoking guests rate this hotel quite high.  However, I would not stay in this hotel again unless the issues I outlined in the caveat section are satisfactorily addressed.
