Huilo Huilo Canopy Village

Interesting Museum to visit if you in Huilo-Huilo, I was impressed by the collection and display of what tribes used, make and wear as their vestments, jewelry, and many other artifacts. Spacious location

Canopy village in Huilo Huilo is a MUST! The cabins are literally built around trees, are beautiful, and have all the basics (including great heat and hot water). Truly immersed in nature. The common kitchen area is great and makes cooking breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner a breeze. Marcelo was amazing and provided great information about all the hikes and other activities in the surrounding areas. Canopy Village is a 5 min walk to an amazing brewery and pizzeria and also walking distance to the fancier hotels if you want to splurge on a nice dinner or want to stop into the spa. Canopy village trully the best of both worlds. Will absolutely return, especially if I have kids!

We stayed in total 4 nights at Huilo Huilo Bio Reserve. We did 2 activities every day - kayaking, hiking, canopying, rafting, etc. We also had the opportunity to meet some of the creators of the magical forest fairies. Each experience was top level, very professional services provided with good quality of the gear. 
The Nothafagus hotel was super great offering good service, top level comfort and a magical experience.

A beautifull location in the heart of a wilderness region with many waterfalls, amazing rivers, dense forests, snow capped volcanos. A great concept in that it also employs, trains and educated about the Mapoche people and allows one to imagine Chile as it was before European settlement. Pricey but staying in wilderness areas of Chile always is - the food was good and the service very sweet and well intended.

A special retreat in the beautiful Huilo Huilo Biologoical Reserve in Northern Patagonia.

Museum of Volcanos

This is one of those times when I wish I could give 2 ratings - a great one for the people who work there and something less than 0 for the lodge itself.  Setting aside the conditions of both of our rooms  in reino fungi (we moved because the sliding door did not close), which, being charitable, were very rundown, what appalled us was the claim that this huge monstrosity somehow represents a "Biological Reserve" and has been honored as such.

Just ask yourself: how can a structure with such an overwhelming ecological footprint be anything close to preserving its environs?  And even if it does, to support the structures, the rooms, the guests, the staff, the transportation needed to access the place, just imagine what they are doing to the rest of Chile?  It is despicable that they give rich and spoiled arm chair environmentalists and "nature lovers" permission to feel good about their "choices," by representing themselves as being a  benefit to the area and country they inhabit.

Shame on you Huilo Huilo!  Had we known the truth, we would have been content to stay in Temuco.

Why this place is called a Biological Reserve is a mystery...

If only we would have read the reviews first!  Doh!!!  We heard wonderful things about Huilo Huilo from several friends that have since left Chile.  We are currently living in Chile & have done quite a bit of traveling here, and this is by far the worst experience we have had.  There is no doubt in my mind that Huilo Huilo was once an amazing place...with a bit of TLC, we think it could be amazing again.  It's such a shame--the concepts are all so great in such a beautiful part of Chile, but nothing is very well executed.  The whole experience was quite the opposite of a "well oiled machine".  From our very first e-mail to reserve our canopy, we had problems.  The reservation confirmation was sent back with the completely wrong dates that we requested.  Then when we got there, it took us a good 3 hours to figure out where to check in!?  Everyone needs to check in at the Noftagus hotel.  (Why is that not in the confirmation e-mails??!!) After being in the car for 8 hours, the last thing we felt like doing was wasting more time!  We finally got the key & got checked into our canopy tree house.  Let me start by saying they are soooo cool!!  What a great concept!!!  Tons of wildlife everywhere--our 3 year old was in heaven.  This is not huilo huilo's fault & they did handle it right away, but as we were walking through the door, we noticed a bloody, rotten deer carcass right outside of it.  So sad & so awful!!!  Not anybody's fault & they did come and take care of it right away, but just one more thing to add to our nightmare vacation.  We think it's super strange though that nobody noticed that before we checked in (the cleaners?, etc)  Anyways, they took care of it so lets move on to our next problem.  That same night when we locked the door with the key from the inside (the only way to lock it is with the key), somehow the lock broke & we got LOCKED INSIDE!  We were locked INSIDE the treehouse for 12 hours.  Cell phones don't get service in the middle of the forest, so we were devising a plan on who was going to shimmy out the window to go get help.  Worried about breaking limbs, we decided to hold off & hope that someone would eventually walk by.  Finally, in the morning, we heard FOOTSTEPS!  Hurrrah!!! So we started yelling & the maintenance worker went & got help & they had to break our door down!  The maintenance crew was all really nice & they handled it quickly, but once they got it open, they said "ok, don't lock your door now" & then they all left.  So we waited for a while thinking maybe someone would come back to fix the lock?!  But nobody did, so we loaded our valuables into our backpacks & set off to the lodge to find out what was going on.  Apparently they thought we were checking out that day (we still had another 3 days booked). So strange!  There were hardly any other guests there so why is it so hard for them to keep track of our information!?!  We asked to speak to the hotel manager & she was super sweet.  She upgraded us to a nice cabana for all of the mishaps.  The cabanas were really nice!  Until...we were enjoying a nice glass of wine & the cozy fire & a bird started swooping at our heads!  That was the icing on the birthday cake for us! (This was my hubby's birthday trip).  We checked out early & drove the 8 hours home.   
In addition to all of this, they made no attempt to clean off any of the volcanic ash that was accumulated from the recent Volcan Calbuca eruption.  We knew there would be some ash, but didn't think it would be that big of a deal as it's still quite far from the volcano.  Apparently a lot of their excursions were cancelled because of it.  Another thing that we feel we should have been informed of before our travels.  
We will definitely not be recommending Huilo Huilo to our friends.  If you are thinking of going there from Santiago, there are so many other beautiful places you can visit in less than half the distance (see some of my other reviews!).
This is really hard for me to write--I am a very generous review writer, but am hoping by typing all of this out, we can save somebody else a disappointing vacation experience like ours.
